Nacogdoches, TX - A Central Heights Middle School teacher and coach has been placed on administrative leave following allegations of sexual assault involving a minor, according to school and law enforcement officials.

Teacher Removed from Duties Within Hours of Notification

Central Heights ISD Superintendent Justin Keeling confirmed that teacher and coach Landon Christopher Odom, 26, of Gary, was removed from his position within two hours of the district being notified of the allegations on Monday. Keeling said the school district is cooperating fully with the Panola County Sheriff’s Office during the ongoing investigation.

Ensuring Student Safety

Keeling emphasized that no students from Central Heights Middle School are connected to the reported incident. School officials said the decision to act quickly was made to ensure student safety and transparency as authorities investigate the case.

Arrest and Investigation Continue

The Panola County Sheriff’s Office reported that Odom was taken into custody without incident on Thursday. He is currently being held on a $100,000 bond, according to court records. Investigators continue to gather evidence and conduct interviews related to the case.

When allegations of sexual assault involve a trusted educator, victims and families often face deep confusion about what steps to take next. Texas sexual abuse lawyer Anjali Nigam shares how state and civil laws protect survivors, what actions families can take to hold offenders accountable, and how schools may bear responsibility when misconduct occurs under their oversight.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: When allegations like this involve a teacher, what legal steps are available to victims and their families?

Anjali Nigam, Esq.: Victims can take both criminal and civil paths. Criminal charges hold the offender accountable to the state, but civil lawsuits can help survivors recover damages for emotional trauma, counseling costs, and loss of education opportunities. Schools can also face liability if there’s evidence they failed to act on prior warnings.

Banville: Do these cases typically involve the school district directly?

Nigam: They can. If it’s shown that school officials ignored signs of misconduct or failed to follow reporting laws, the district may be held responsible under Texas civil law. Each case depends on the evidence and how much the institution knew beforehand.

Banville: What should families do first if they suspect misconduct?

Nigam: Immediate reporting is vital. Families should contact law enforcement and seek guidance from an attorney with experience in sexual abuse cases. Early action helps protect other students and preserves key evidence.
