Sanford, FL - A Seminole County high school teacher has been arrested after investigators say she engaged in a sexual relationship with a student while also providing drugs and alcohol to minors, according to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.
Accused Teacher Held Without Bond
Deputies arrested 49-year-old Mackenzie McLean, who teaches history, government, and economics at Crooms Academy in Sanford. McLean faces multiple felony charges, including two counts of an authority figure soliciting or engaging in sexual conduct with a student and distribution of a controlled substance. She remains held without bond in the Seminole County Jail.
Arrest Report Details Shocking Allegations
According to the arrest report, McLean allegedly supplied students with alcohol, marijuana, vapes, and Adderall. Investigators say she used the substances to manipulate one student, providing alcohol until the victim “would allow her to use them sexually,” the report stated.
The same victim told deputies that McLean would yell until allowed to sleep in the victim’s bed, incidents that reportedly occurred both at McLean’s home and at times when the victim was away at college.
Deputies say the victim did not come forward earlier due to fear of losing housing, as they had moved in with McLean after family problems. The victim told authorities they had viewed McLean as a mother figure before the abuse began.
Second Victim Steps Forward
A second person later came forward, telling deputies that McLean began providing them substances when they were 16 years old. This victim reported that McLean invited students to her home, where heavy drinking and smoking often led them to pass out. They also said McLean continued supplying Adderall after they left for college.
School District Confirms Administrative Leave
Seminole County Public Schools confirmed that McLean has been placed on administrative leave following her arrest. In a written statement, the district said she was removed from campus responsibilities pending the outcome of the case.
Court Appearance Scheduled
Authorities say McLean is expected to make her first court appearance on Wednesday. The investigation remains ongoing.
Florida Sexual Abuse Attorney Explains Legal Options for Families After Charter School Teacher Arrest
Following the arrest of a Seminole County charter school teacher accused of sexually abusing students and providing them drugs and alcohol, families are asking what steps they can take to hold those responsible accountable. We spoke with Florida sexual abuse lawyer Michael Haggard, who explained how victims and their families can seek justice through both criminal proceedings and civil actions against individuals and institutions that may have failed to protect students.
Laurence Banville, Esq.: When cases like this arise, families are often shocked and unsure where to turn. What immediate legal steps can they take?
Michael Haggard, Esq.: The first step is always to ensure safety and emotional support for the victim. From a legal perspective, families can file both a criminal complaint and a civil lawsuit. The civil route can hold not only the abuser accountable but also the school or charter organization if it failed to properly supervise or respond to prior warnings.
Banville: Can the school be held liable even if the teacher acted off campus?
Haggard: Yes, under certain circumstances. If there were signs of misconduct, grooming behavior, or complaints that were ignored, the school can be found negligent in supervision or retention. These cases often involve reviewing internal records, digital communications, and prior disciplinary actions.
Banville: For families watching this unfold, what’s your advice?
Haggard: Reach out to an attorney who understands both the emotional and procedural aspects of these cases. The law in Florida provides tools for victims to regain control and hold institutions accountable when they fail to protect students.
