Alvin, TX - A former Alvin Community College dual enrollment instructor is now behind bars, facing multiple child sex crime charges, according to Pearland Police.

Arrest and Investigation

Investigators say 44-year-old Erik Neel was taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation. Neel faces three charges: online solicitation of a minor and two counts of possession of computer-generated child pornography and sexual conduct. Police allege that Neel believed he was communicating with someone under the age of 15. He is being held at the Brazoria County Jail on a $450,000 bond.

Connection to Pearland ISD

Pearland ISD confirms that Neel was contracted through Alvin Community College to teach at Turner College and Career High School and Dawson High School. The district emphasized that Neel was not a direct employee and that none of the allegations involve Pearland ISD students.

When asked for comment, Pearland ISD provided a statement to ABC13, saying it is fully cooperating with the Pearland Police Department's investigation. The district also reported the allegations to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and the State Board for Educator Certification, reiterating that student and staff safety remain a top priority.

Community Reaction

Parents have expressed deep concern following the arrest. One mother told ABC13 that the news worried her because her child had been in Neel’s class last year at Turner College and Career High School.

College Statement

Alvin Community College confirmed that Neel is no longer affiliated with the institution. The college stated that student safety is its highest priority and that it will assist authorities as needed as the case continues to unfold.

Sexual abuse by a college instructor can leave lasting harm for victims and their families. To understand the legal paths available after such abuse, Texas lawyer Anjali Nigam explains how victims may take civil and criminal action, hold individuals and institutions accountable, and access protections under state and federal law. This conversation offers valuable insights for anyone affected by abuse in academic settings.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: What legal steps can victims or their families take if a college instructor is accused of sexual abuse?

Anjali Nigam, Esq.: Victims have both civil and criminal avenues to consider. Criminally, the state prosecutes the accused, but victims can also pursue civil action for damages against the individual and, in some cases, the institution responsible for oversight. These claims aim to hold all parties accountable and can provide compensation for emotional distress and related trauma.

Banville: How do cases like this typically move forward if victims decide to act?

Nigam: Once a report is filed and an investigation begins, it’s important for victims to secure legal representation early. An attorney helps ensure their rights are protected and that any evidence is properly preserved. Civil claims may move forward after the criminal case concludes, depending on the circumstances.

Banville: What message would you share with anyone impacted by such allegations?

Nigam: Victims should know that they have the right to come forward and that there are resources available to help them navigate the legal process. No one should feel alone in these situations.
