Loxahatchee, FL - A former assistant football coach from Seminole Ridge High School has been arrested after authorities say security footage captured him engaging in sexual acts with a 14-year-old student on school grounds. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Ruben Paulo Tirado, remains in custody on a $100,000 bond.

Alleged Incidents Captured on Camera

According to investigators, the acts occurred several times inside Building 6 after school hours, with the most explicit encounter recorded on October 30. Officials say the footage shows Tirado in a sexual manner with the student in a hallway, prompting an immediate investigation once discovered.

Charges and Ongoing Investigation

A probable cause affidavit released Thursday lists two counts of lewd and lascivious battery and one count of offenses against students by authority figures. Authorities said the victim told detectives that the incidents took place over the past three months, each coordinated to occur on campus after dismissal.

Investigators also revealed that the families of Tirado and the victim had known each other for about two years. Tirado reportedly coached the teen on a separate travel sports team outside the school.

School District Terminates Employment

The Palm Beach County School District confirmed Tirado’s termination, stating that his employment was immediately ended following his arrest. In a written statement distributed to families and staff, officials reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment.

“Any conduct that threatens the safety and well-being of our students is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” the district’s message read. “We will continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement to support the prosecution of this case to the fullest extent of the law.”

Court Proceedings Ahead

Tirado was taken into custody on November 11. Court documents indicate that he remains held at the Palm Beach County Jail while awaiting further proceedings. The case continues to unfold as investigators gather additional evidence and statements from those involved.

Victims of sexual abuse often face deep emotional scars and complex legal challenges, especially when the offender is a trusted coach or authority figure. To explain what rights victims have and how the legal process can help them regain control, we sat down with Florida trial lawyer Michael Haggard, known for representing survivors of assault and institutional negligence in sports and educational settings.

Laurence Banville: When a student is abused by a coach or authority figure, what legal actions are open to the victim and their family?

Michael Haggard: In Florida, victims can pursue both criminal and civil cases. The criminal process addresses punishment, but a civil lawsuit — often against the perpetrator and potentially the institution — allows victims to seek financial compensation for trauma and long-term impact.

Banville: Can schools or districts be held liable in such cases?

Haggard: Yes, if evidence shows that the school failed to supervise, ignored warning signs, or didn’t act on complaints. Institutions have a duty to protect students and maintain strict oversight of staff behavior. Negligence in these duties can result in civil liability.
