Ohio Attorney Explains Legal Options for Victims of Coach Abuse
Across Ohio and beyond, cases involving coaches accused of sexual misconduct have raised questions about the legal paths available to those affected. Experienced sexual abuse lawyer John Bey outlines the steps victims can take to hold offenders and negligent institutions accountable under Ohio law.
Laurence Banville, Esq.: When a coach or school employee is convicted of crimes like this, what steps can victims take to protect their rights?
John Bey, Esq.: Victims can consider both criminal and civil actions. While the state handles the criminal prosecution, survivors may also seek civil compensation from those responsible, including institutions that failed to prevent the abuse. These cases often focus on accountability, not just from the abuser but from organizations that overlooked warning signs.
Banville: Are there time limits for victims to come forward in Ohio?
Bey: Yes, but the limits depend on the age of the victim and the specifics of the case. Ohio has expanded timeframes for survivors of childhood sexual abuse, allowing more individuals to file claims even years after the abuse occurred.
