Investigative Cooperation Across Agencies

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office credited the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) for their combined efforts in developing the case.

Marion County authorities recently charged former teacher Eric Marshall Favor Jr. with crimes against minors. Families facing similar situations now turn to attorneys for guidance on civil remedies available in South Carolina. Experienced sexual abuse lawyer James Moore shares options for victims sexually abused by a middle school teacher.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: Families of minors abused by a teacher often feel overwhelmed. What civil actions can they take in South Carolina?

James Moore, Esq.: Victims can file lawsuits against the abuser and the school for negligence in hiring or supervision. Compensation covers therapy, lost wages, and pain, with statutes allowing claims years after discovery.

Banville: How does criminal prosecution affect these cases?

Moore: A conviction strengthens civil suits by providing evidence. Families should consult lawyers promptly to preserve evidence and meet filing windows, often extended for child victims.
