Mesquite, TX - A 32-year-old man from Crandall, identified as Matthan Lough, has been arrested on a child grooming charge, according to the Mesquite Police Department. Authorities announced Thursday that Lough was taken into custody last week after investigators obtained an arrest warrant for the offense. Police confirmed that Lough is no longer booked in the Mesquite jail.
Investigation Originated at Local Church
Investigators began examining the case on October 2, 2025, after receiving a report of possible child grooming activities at the Christian Center of Mesquite, located in the 4400 block of East Cartwright Road. Officials have not released specific details about the alleged incident or the age of the victim.
Employment and Community Connections
During their investigation, authorities found that Lough had prior access to minors through his teaching and coaching roles in the Mesquite area. He previously worked as a teacher and coach at Pioneer Technology and Arts Academy and served as a club volleyball coach for a team based in Mesquite.
Police officials also confirmed that Lough is the son of former Christian Center of Mesquite Senior Pastor Kevin Lough, who has since resigned from his position, effective November 23, 2025.
Church Board Statement
Following the public release from law enforcement, the Christian Center of Mesquite Board issued a statement addressing the arrest. The Board expressed its “strongest possible condemnation” of the actions leading to the charge and emphasized that Matthan Lough was not employed by the church.
The statement further outlined key measures taken by the church, including full cooperation with the Mesquite Police Department, initiating a review of child protection policies, and reaffirming a zero-tolerance policy for any form of abuse or misconduct. The church board will maintain direct oversight of operations until a new senior pastor is appointed.
Ongoing Investigation
Mesquite Police are continuing to investigate and are asking anyone with information about additional offenses involving Lough to contact the department at 972-216-6701.
TX Sexual Abuse Lawyer Explains Legal Options for Victims Harmed by Teachers
In the aftermath of allegations involving educators and youth mentors, many survivors and families struggle to understand what legal steps they can take. To help clarify the options available under Texas law, we spoke with Houston-based sexual abuse lawyer Anjali Nigam about how victims abused by a teacher or coach can hold both perpetrators and negligent institutions accountable through criminal complaints and civil lawsuits.
Laurence Banville, Esq.: When a teacher or coach faces allegations like this, what options do victims have under Texas law?
Anjali Nigam, Esq.: Victims can pursue both criminal and civil actions. The criminal process focuses on holding the offender accountable through prosecution, while a civil claim allows the survivor to seek compensation for emotional trauma, therapy costs, and long-term damage. It’s important victims and families consult an attorney early to understand their rights and filing deadlines.
Banville: Can institutions also face responsibility in these cases?
Nigam: Yes. If a school, church, or organization failed to conduct proper background checks, ignored warning signs, or didn’t follow mandatory reporting laws, they may be held liable for negligence. That accountability not only helps the victim recover but also pressures institutions to strengthen safety protocols.
Banville: What’s your advice to survivors or families who suspect abuse?
Nigam: Report it immediately to law enforcement, then seek legal counsel from someone experienced in handling sexual abuse cases. No one should have to face these circumstances alone, and early legal intervention can protect both the survivor’s rights and emotional well-being.
