Atlanta, GA - A student was hospitalized Friday morning after being stabbed several times during a fight at North Atlanta High School, forcing a brief lockdown and sparking parent concerns about safety on campus.
Fight Outside Cafeteria Sparks Lockdown
Atlanta Public Schools officials confirmed the altercation involved two students and happened outside the cafeteria shortly after classes began. The injured student was taken to a local hospital for treatment, while the other was detained by school police.
“This was an isolated incident involving only the two students. No other students were involved, and there is no ongoing threat to students or staff. Normal school operations have continued,” APS said in a statement.
The school went into lockdown after reports of the stabbing came in around 9:30 a.m. A video showed several officers investigating near the campus off Northside Parkway. The area was secured and classes later resumed.
Video Appears to Show Scissor Attack
Video showing the fight, in which one student appeared to stab the other in the eye with scissors. APS confirmed the injuries were caused by scissors but declined to provide additional details about the wounds.
School officials provided aid to the injured student immediately following the incident before police secured the scene. The district’s police department is leading the investigation.
Students Describe Chaotic Scene
Student Kamya Lowe, who witnessed the fight, said it appeared to escalate rapidly.
“It started off as a fight, and then he grabbed his scissors,” Lowe said, describing the moment when the confrontation turned violent.
Lowe added that the victim did not fight back and described the atmosphere as chaotic as other students began recording the altercation.
Parents Voice Concerns Over Safety
Parents expressed deep concern after learning about the incident during the lockdown. One parent said her daughter called her “frantic” as the school went on shutdown.
Another mother said the stabbing brought back painful memories after one of her children was also attacked on campus last year. “You send your kids to school thinking they’re going to be okay and something like this happens,” the mother said.
Second Scissor Attack This Year
Friday’s stabbing marks the second reported scissor attack at North Atlanta High School in 2025. Another student was hospitalized after a similar fight in April.
Despite security measures such as metal detectors, parents are questioning whether the school district is doing enough to protect students. “It’s scary. You send your kids to school thinking they’re going to be safe,” said parent Yuvonka Stephens.
Authorities have not disclosed the condition of the injured student or what charges the detained student may face. The investigation remains active.
