Pensacola, FL - A Pensacola youth director and his son have been arrested as part of an ongoing juvenile sexual assault investigation, according to Pensacola Police.

Community Figure Charged with Sexual Battery

Rodney Jones, 57, was taken into custody Thursday morning on a charge of Sexual Battery of a Victim age 16 or 17. Police say his arrest follows an extensive investigation that remains active. Jones is currently being held in the Escambia County Jail on a $250,000 bond.

In a statement, police confirmed Jones’ arrest “as a result of an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Pensacola Police Department.” Officials withheld any additional details, saying more information will be released “as appropriate.”

Son Accused of Witness Tampering

Rodney Jones’ son, 26-year-old Rodrico Jones, was taken into custody Sunday on a charge of tampering with a witness. He remains in jail without bond, according to authorities.

Youth Program Under Scrutiny

Rodney Jones is the director of New World Believers’ HOOPS program (Healthy Opportunities and Options to Promote Success), which operates with funding from the Escambia Children’s Trust. The initiative was designed to guide and support at-risk youth through sports and mentorship.

Jones is also known for his community involvement, including work with the local NAACP chapter and other civil rights organizations.

At this stage, police have not released further information about the nature of the allegations or the connection between the two arrests. The investigation remains ongoing.

When allegations of sexual abuse arise against a youth director, families often find themselves overwhelmed by fear, confusion, and unanswered questions about what can be done next. In this interview, Florida sexual abuse lawyer Michael Haggard explores the legal paths available to survivors and their loved ones. Learn how criminal and civil cases intersect, the potential liability of youth programs and sponsoring organizations, and the practical steps families can take to protect their children while asserting their rights under Florida law.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: When allegations surface against a youth director, parents are often terrified and unsure where to turn. What are some of the first steps a family should consider from a legal standpoint?

Michael Haggard, Esq.: The priority is always the immediate safety and wellbeing of the child, which usually means reporting to law enforcement and making sure the minor is in a safe environment. At the same time, families should speak with a civil attorney as early as possible so evidence can be preserved and potential claims can be evaluated.

Banville: How might a youth program or sponsoring organization become part of a case like this?

Haggard: When abuse is alleged against a youth director, we look closely at whether the organization failed to screen, supervise, or respond to warning signs. If there were missed red flags, poor reporting procedures, or a pattern of ignoring complaints, the program and related entities may face liability for putting children at risk.

Banville: What can a civil claim actually do for a survivor and their family?

Haggard: A lawsuit can seek financial recovery for therapy, medical treatment, and long-term trauma. It can also drive change by forcing stronger policies, mandatory training, and better oversight so other families are not exposed to the same danger.

Banville: Many families feel powerless when these cases come to light. How can legal guidance change that?

Haggard: Speaking with a lawyer who handles these cases gives families a clearer sense of their options. They can understand how the criminal investigation, civil claims, and child welfare systems intersect, and begin to see a path forward that protects their child and holds wrongdoers accountable.
