Rockledge, FL - Police have released alarming new details about alleged abuse inside the Gingerbread Manor Child Care Center, located at 985 Eyster Blvd, Rockledge, FL 32955. Investigators say children were “tortured” by three employees — Kia Walker, Nativia King, and Stacy Hamilton Jackson — who have been charged in connection with the case.

Allegations Against Daycare Staff

According to police, Walker served as the general manager, King was a teacher, and Jackson worked as a cook at the facility. During their first court appearances at the Brevard County jail on Saturday, defense attorney Tim McCullough stated that the arrest reports contained no indication of physical injury. He said the charges stem primarily from interviews with children between one and four years old.

Police Report Describes Pattern of Abuse

A newly released police report Monday tells a different story. In a letter citing information from the Department of Children and Families, investigators said, “All the teachers hit the children as a form of punishment. The teachers either hit with open hands or a wooden spoon.”

Police also say video evidence captures numerous instances of abuse. The report claims, “Almost every time the suspects were captured on video, they seemed angry and were torturing the children for no apparent reason, causing them to cry, flinch, and be scared.”

Emotional Damage Reported by Families

Attorney Brynn Brito, representing two of the victims’ families, described what she has seen as deeply distressing. “I can tell you that there is significant bruising, incredible emotional damage,” Brito said.

Judge Grants Pretrial Release

During a weekend hearing, Judge Kelly McKibben granted all three defendants pretrial release, allowing them to return home pending further proceedings.

Authorities say the investigation is still ongoing.

As investigations continue into reports of abuse at Florida daycare centers, families are turning to legal experts for guidance on how to respond. To better understand what steps victims’ families can take, we sat down with veteran sexual abuse lawyer Michael Haggard. Together, they discussed how Florida law addresses childcare abuse cases, what evidence can strengthen a claim, and how parents can protect their children’s rights while seeking accountability.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: For families learning their children may have suffered abuse at a daycare, what immediate steps should they take?

Michael Haggard, Esq.: They should contact law enforcement and the Department of Children and Families right away, then reach out to a lawyer who handles daycare negligence or abuse cases. Families can pursue both civil and criminal proceedings — the state handles the criminal side, while a civil case can recover damages for medical expenses, trauma, and long-term care.

Banville: How do investigators typically establish liability against a facility in cases like this?

Haggard: Video evidence, staff testimony, and DCF reports play a major role. If there’s proof the daycare failed to monitor employees or ignored warning signs, both the individuals and the center can be held responsible under Florida law.

Banville: And for parents worried about retaliation or fear of coming forward?

Haggard: They’re protected by the law. Florida statutes ensure victims and their families can make reports anonymously and still have their claims fully investigated.
