Basking Ridge, NJ - A former Ridge High School assistant track coach is facing multiple felony charges in North Carolina after two children accused him of sexual assault, investigators said.
Two-Month Investigation Leads to Arrest
William E. Alston, 34, of Aberdeen, was arrested following a two-month investigation by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit. He faces one count of statutory sexual offense with a child by an adult and four counts of taking indecent liberties with children.
Authorities launched the investigation on September 2 after a report of a sexual assault involving a minor. Two young girls later came forward, telling detectives that Alston sexually assaulted them, according to the sheriff’s office.
Accused Coach's Arrest and Extradition
Alston was taken into custody by Aberdeen police on November 7. He was then extradited to Onslow County by the U.S. Marshal Service on December 3. He is currently being held at the Onslow County Detention Center with no bond following his first court appearance on Thursday.
The Aberdeen Police Department also confirmed it is conducting a separate criminal investigation into alleged offenses that occurred in its jurisdiction.
Ridge High School Confirms Termination
Alston previously worked as an Instructional Aide and Assistant Track Coach at Ridge High School in Bernards Township, New Jersey. Superintendent Nick Markarian stated in a letter to the community that Alston had been suspended in September and formally terminated in November.
“The individual in question has not worked in our district since the end of September due to a suspension and was terminated in November,” Markarian said. “At this time, we have no information that this individual had been inappropriate with any of our students. We will be communicating with students and staff at Ridge about this case to support them and ensure that everyone is safe.”
Ongoing Community and Law Enforcement Response
School officials are urging anyone with information related to Alston or any safety concerns to contact a trusted staff member, counselor, administrator, or School Resource Officer.
Authorities have not released further details about the ongoing investigations in both Onslow County and Aberdeen.
Legal Options for Victims After Abuse by a Track Coach
Following reports that a former Ridge High School assistant coach was charged with sexually assaulting two minors, New Jersey sexual abuse attorney Eric Weitz discusses what legal rights victims and their families have. He shares how survivors can seek accountability through both criminal proceedings and civil actions against individuals and institutions responsible for their safety.
Laurence Banville, Esq.: When news like this breaks, many victims or their families feel unsure about what steps they can take. What legal options exist for survivors who were abused by a coach or school employee?
Eric Weitz, Esq.: In cases like this, survivors may be able to file a civil lawsuit against both the perpetrator and, depending on the facts, the institution that employed them. Schools and athletic programs have a duty to protect minors under their supervision. If a school ignored warning signs or failed to properly vet or monitor an employee, they can be held accountable.
Banville: And what should families do if they suspect abuse but haven’t yet reported it?
Weitz: The first step is always contacting law enforcement to ensure the victim’s safety. After that, speaking with an attorney experienced in sexual abuse law can help determine if a civil claim is appropriate. Prompt action can make a difference in preserving evidence and protecting other potential victims.
Banville: So even if criminal charges are pending, families still have separate rights under civil law?
Weitz: Absolutely. Criminal proceedings focus on punishment; civil cases focus on justice and recovery for the survivor. Both can move forward independently, and one doesn’t prevent the other.
