Legal Options for Victims After a Bar Stabbing: A Conversation with Attorney Anjali Nigam
When violent incidents erupt in public places such as bars, victims and their families often face overwhelming questions about medical costs, accountability, and legal recourse. In an interview with attorney Anjali Nigam, a Texas personal injury lawyer experienced in handling stabbing and assault cases, we explore how victims can take legal action to recover damages and hold negligent parties responsible.
Laurence Banville, Esq.: When someone is injured during an altercation at a bar, what legal steps might their family take?
Anjali Nigam, Esq.: Victims or their families may have both civil and criminal paths to explore. Aside from the criminal charges the suspect faces, a civil claim can be filed against those responsible for the attack or even against the establishment, depending on whether negligence played a part—such as inadequate security or overserving intoxicated patrons.
Banville: So even if the suspect is caught and charged, the victim’s family could still pursue financial recovery?
Nigam: Exactly. A criminal case punishes the offender, while a civil claim helps the victim recover medical costs, lost wages, and damages tied to emotional or physical trauma.
