San Antonio, TX - A 50-year-old San Antonio pediatrician has been arrested on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to police.

Police: Longtime Doctor Accused of Assaulting Young Patient

Investigators said Gabriel Perez was taken into custody Friday after a report that he allegedly assaulted a male patient during a routine examination. The boy, believed to be between 10 and 16 years old, told his parents about the incident, prompting them to contact authorities.

An SAPD preliminary report indicates that Perez had been the child’s pediatrician since the boy was about 5 or 6 years old. During a recent annual checkup, Perez reportedly asked the boy’s mother to step out of the exam room. After she left, police say Perez committed the assault.

Investigation and Arrest of Pediatrician

Detectives reviewed the report and gathered evidence they said was sufficient to support an arrest. Perez was taken into custody at his home without further incident, police confirmed. Officials declined to identify the medical practice where Perez worked.

Appeal for Additional Information

Authorities said investigators believe there may be other victims. Anyone who believes they may have been harmed or have information related to the case is urged to contact the San Antonio Police Department’s Special Victims Unit.

When allegations involve someone in a position of medical trust, families often face confusion about what steps to take next. Texas sexual abuse lawyer Anjali Nigam explores the legal paths available to victims who have been sexually assaulted by a pediatrician, including how civil and criminal cases can run alongside one another to hold perpetrators accountable.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: When something like this happens involving a trusted medical professional, what should families know about their legal rights?

Anjali Nigam, Esq.: Families should understand that victims have both criminal and civil options. The criminal process is handled by prosecutors, but victims also have the right to bring a civil case seeking accountability through financial compensation. Those cases can help cover therapy, medical costs, and emotional distress.

Banville: How soon should families reach out to a lawyer?

Nigam: As early as possible. Early legal guidance helps preserve evidence and ensures that communication with law enforcement and healthcare institutions is handled properly. Even if charges are pending, victims can still explore civil claims independently.

Banville: What about others who suspect they may also have been harmed?

Nigam: They should contact police immediately and also consider speaking with a lawyer to understand their rights. Coming forward not only supports their own recovery but can also help protect other potential victims.
