Canton, OH - A Canton pastor has admitted guilt in a criminal case involving a 13-year-old girl. Jesse Santos, the pastor of Canton Seventh-Day Adventist Church, pleaded guilty Thursday to an amended charge of abduction in Ashland County Court of Common Pleas.

Details of the Case

Santos was arrested in February 2025 after investigators linked him to allegations involving the young girl. He was originally charged with kidnapping, two counts of gross sexual imposition, and endangering children. According to police, the incident occurred in September 2025 at a campsite in the 3000 block of Ashland County Road at River Run Campground in Loudonville.

Upcoming Sentencing

Ashland County Judge David Stimpert will sentence Santos on March 5. Court officials have not yet indicated the potential length or nature of the sentence Santos may face.

Community Impact

The case has drawn widespread attention in Canton and surrounding communities, especially among parishioners at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church where Santos served as pastor. Church leaders have not commented publicly on the guilty plea, but previously stated they were cooperating with law enforcement during the investigation.

In the aftermath of clergy abuse cases involving community pastors, many families are left struggling to understand their legal rights. We sat down with Ohio sexual abuse lawyer John Bey to discuss how victims and their families can seek accountability through both criminal and civil courts. Bey outlined the steps survivors can take to protect their rights, secure compensation, and begin the path toward healing.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: When a case like this comes to light, many survivors wonder what their legal rights are. What avenues are available for victims in Ohio?

John Bey, Esq.: Survivors have both criminal and civil options. While criminal proceedings focus on punishing the offender, civil lawsuits allow victims to hold the individual and, in some cases, the institution accountable for the harm they endured. These cases can help survivors secure compensation for therapy, medical treatment, and emotional suffering.

Banville: What’s the first step someone should take if they decide to come forward?

Bey: Reaching out to an attorney experienced in sexual abuse cases is key. A lawyer can explain the statute of limitations, guide them through the process, and ensure their rights are protected while they decide how to proceed.
