San Francisco, CA - A student was shot in the leg Tuesday at Burton High School in San Francisco, according to police and school officials. The injured student was taken to a nearby hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities say the suspect fled the campus shortly after the shooting, prompting a swift lockdown of the school. Classes were halted, and students remained sheltered inside classrooms while officers secured the area.

Suspect Located and Arrested Nearby

Police later found the juvenile suspect in the 1400 block of Shafter Avenue. Officers say the individual was taken into custody without incident, and a firearm was recovered during the arrest. Officials have not confirmed whether the suspect is also a Burton High student or has any connection to the victim.

Parents Alerted as Investigation Continues

Students reported that the lockdown lasted for roughly an hour before normal activities resumed. The district superintendent announced that parents received a text notification explaining how and where they could pick up their children early if they wished.

The San Francisco Police Department confirmed that the shooting remains an open and active investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to call 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411, beginning the message with “SFPD.”

After recent school incidents across California, we spoke with lawyer Jason Amala, who focuses on representing survivors of sexual abuse, about what legal steps victims can take if a teacher is involved in misconduct.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: Victims of school shootings deal with severe injuries and emotional damage. What claims can they file?

Jason Amala, Esq.: Families can file civil suits against the shooter, school districts, or security providers for negligence. California law supports recovery for medical costs, pain, and lost income without limits on certain damages.

Banville: What about the school’s safety measures?

Amala: Schools must maintain secure environments. Failure to address threats or enforce protocols creates liability. Victims need to gather records fast and contact counsel to protect their case.
