Swainsboro, GA - Authorities have arrested a Swainsboro High School teacher on allegations involving inappropriate conduct with students. The Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Angel J. Oliver was taken into custody this week and booked into the county jail.

Charges Filed Against Angel Oliver

Oliver faces three counts of improper sexual conduct by an employee. According to investigators, the allegations stem from interactions connected to a student or students at Swainsboro High School. Officials have not released additional details about the situation, citing the ongoing investigation.

District Responds to Arrest

Emanuel County Schools Superintendent Dr. Denise Warnock announced Friday that the district immediately reported the matter to law enforcement upon learning of the allegations.

“Upon receiving allegations involving an employee and students, the district promptly notified law enforcement and placed the employee on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation,” Warnock said in a statement. “The district has been informed that an arrest has been made. The individual is no longer employed by Emanuel County Schools.”

When allegations of sexual abuse arise in a school setting, victims and their families are often left unsure of what steps to take next. To help explain the legal remedies that may be available, Georgia sexual abuse lawyer John Bey explores how victims can protect their rights, file civil claims, and seek accountability when a teacher is accused of misconduct.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: When allegations involve a teacher and students, what legal options might victims have beyond a criminal investigation?

John Bey, Esq.: While criminal charges hold the perpetrator accountable through the justice system, victims also have the right to seek civil action. This could include a lawsuit against the individual teacher and, in some cases, the school district if negligence is found. Civil claims can help victims recover damages for emotional distress, counseling costs, and other long-term impacts.

Banville: Are there any immediate actions survivors should take?

Bey: Yes. Victims or their families should contact law enforcement, preserve any communication or evidence, and seek legal guidance as soon as possible. An experienced attorney can assess the situation, ensure their rights are protected, and help them understand what compensation may be available under Georgia law.
