WILMINGTON, OH — A Blanchester pastor is behind bars after being charged with four felony counts, including rape, for what investigators describe as years of abuse against a teenage member of his congregation.

Authorities confirmed that 48-year-old Silas Shelton, former pastor of Blanchester Community Church, was taken into custody without incident on Wednesday. He is currently held at the Clinton County Adult Detention Center.

Allegations Span Six Years of Child Sex Abuse

According to Wilmington police, the case traces back to the fall of 2019, when Shelton allegedly began inappropriate sexual contact with a girl who was 14 or 15 at the time. Court documents allege that the misconduct started while both the young victim and her family attended Shelton’s church.

A detective leading the case described a prolonged pattern of behavior marked by manipulation and emotional control. Investigators believe the victim felt trapped and isolated due to Shelton’s influence as a religious authority figure. The detective said the abuse continued until earlier this year.

Locations and Ongoing Investigation

Authorities allege that the incidents occurred at multiple locations, including Shelton’s home in Morrow, at Cowan Lake in Clinton County, and in area hotels. The charges followed a comprehensive investigation by the Wilmington Police Department.

Police said Shelton is scheduled for a preliminary hearing next week. Officials continue to investigate potential additional incidents or witnesses.

Families affected by abuse at the hands of trusted faith figures often face confusion and pain when learning of such betrayal. To understand what steps victims and their loved ones can take, seasoned Ohio sexual abuse lawyer John Bey explained how both criminal and civil laws can provide avenues for accountability and help survivors move forward.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: When cases like this involve a trusted faith leader, families are often devastated. What options do they have under Ohio law?

John Bey, Esq.: Families can take both criminal and civil action. Prosecutors handle the criminal case, but a civil claim can help survivors and their families hold the individual and potentially the institution accountable. Churches have a duty to protect their members, and if they ignored warning signs or failed to report misconduct, they could be held liable.

Banville: Are there time limits for bringing civil claims?

Bey: Yes. Ohio recently extended the statute of limitations, giving survivors more time to come forward. Still, acting quickly helps preserve evidence and strengthens the case. Anyone affected should contact an attorney experienced in abuse cases to review their situation confidentially.
