Bradford Middle School Teacher, Matthew Dawson Watson, Jailed on $500K Bond for Alleged Online Sexual Acts With Student Under 16

Starke, FL – A Bradford Middle School teacher was arrested Monday after being accused of engaging in online sexual activity with a student under 16, according to the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies reported that Matthew Dawson Watson, 27, surrendered to authorities following a warrant issued last Friday.

Investigation Details Emerge in Teacher’s Online Sexual Misconduct

The arrest warrant states that Watson “intentionally” participated in online sexual activity for the victim to view between December 1, 2024, and February 12, 2025. The initial report was made by a Bradford Middle School employee on February 12, prompting immediate administrative leave for Watson as school officials and law enforcement intervened.

Watson was employed as a 7th and 8th grade Social Studies teacher in the Bradford County School District since August 2022. He resigned from his position on May 19, prior to his arrest. District records indicate there were no other complaints or prior investigations relating to Watson during his tenure.

District Issues Statement Following Allegations of Teacher Sexual Abuse

The Bradford County School District released a statement addressing the arrest of their former employee:

“We have been made aware of the recent arrest of a former Bradford County School District employee. While we cannot share details due to the ongoing investigation and privacy concerns, we can confirm that the moment the district was made aware of the allegations, we responded swiftly and in full accordance with district policy. The individual was immediately placed on administrative leave and the matter was referred to law enforcement. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remains our top priority. We are committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive environment in all our schools. We understand that situations like this can raise concern within our community and we appreciate your trust and support as authorities continue their work.”

— Karen Clarke, Bradford County School District deputy superintendent.

Community Reaction and Additional Allegations

A parent who spoke with News4JAX revealed that investigators contacted her to arrange an interview with her own daughter regarding a potential inappropriate teacher-student relationship. While her daughter is not the victim in this case, the parent said it appears Watson was attempting to target other students as well.

She recounted, “The victim’s mom reached out to me and told me what she saw about my daughter in the victim’s phone. He was talking to students through social media and was asking inappropriate questions about my daughter.” The identities of the parent and her child are being withheld for privacy.

Middle School Teacher Facing Child Sex Charges

Watson faces charges including transmission of live sexual conduct over a computer and offenses against students by authority figures. He is currently held at Bradford County Jail with bond set at $500,000.

When a student is harmed by someone in a position of authority, the effects can be long-lasting, not just emotionally, but legally. As the arrest of a Bradford Middle School teacher draws public attention, many are asking what steps victims and their families can take. Florida attorney Michael Haggard, who has handled numerous sexual abuse cases, joined Laurence Banville to discuss how the law addresses abuse in educational settings, what rights victims have, and how schools may be held accountable.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: When a student is harmed by a teacher in this way, what legal avenues can the family explore?

Michael Haggard, Esq.: Survivors of this kind of abuse—and their families—may have the ability to file civil lawsuits not only against the individual who committed the wrongdoing but also against the school district, if there’s evidence that warning signs were missed or not properly acted upon. These cases can focus on accountability and also help families with access to resources they may need to begin healing.

Banville: Even if the accused resigned before being arrested, does the school district still bear responsibility in civil court?

Haggard: Resignation doesn’t erase what happened. If the district was notified or should have known about concerning behavior and failed to act, they may still be liable. Each case depends on what policies were in place and how they were followed once the allegations surfaced.

Banville: What should parents do if they suspect something isn’t right?

Haggard: They should report any concerns immediately—to school officials, and to law enforcement if necessary. It’s important to preserve communications, document concerns, and seek legal counsel if there’s any indication a child may have been targeted. Timely action can make a significant difference in both legal outcomes and a child’s recovery.
