Baltimore County Pastor Thomas Pinkerton Jr. Charged With Sexually Abusing Six Teens at Central Christian Church

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Thomas Pinkerton Jr., a 52-year-old former youth minister known as “Pastor Tommy,” is behind bars after being accused of sexually abusing multiple boys during his time at Central Christian Church, an Assemblies of God congregation in Baltimore County. Pinkerton was extradited from Georgia last week and now faces 24 felony and misdemeanor charges.

Allegations of Grooming and Abuse by MD Youth Pastor

Court records released last week allege Pinkerton told boys in his church youth group that it was normal for a pastor to kiss them on the lips, claiming that’s how Jesus greeted his disciples. Former members told police that this “kissing” was only the beginning, and that further abuse occurred between 2006 and 2010, involving boys between 13 and 19 years old.

Youth Pastor Sexual Abuse Spanned Church and Home

The arrest warrant states the alleged assaults happened at both the church and Pinkerton’s home in Maryland. Another man has since come forward in Georgia with similar accusations, which have been referred to authorities there.

Pastor Pleads Not Guilty

Pinkerton has pleaded not guilty. His attorney, Justin Hollimon, said Monday his client was “completely shocked” by the allegations and has requested another bond hearing after a judge denied release. Hollimon described Pinkerton as a community servant who is now “anxiously waiting his day in court.”

Police Believe More Victims May Come Forward

Baltimore County detectives are urging anyone with information to contact them, saying they believe additional victims may be out there.

Assemblies of God Grapples With Broader Scandal

Pinkerton’s arrest lands as the Assemblies of God, the largest Pentecostal denomination in the United States with nearly 3 million members, faces mounting pressure over its handling of sexual abuse cases.

What’s Next in the Case

Pinkerton remains in custody as both Maryland and Georgia authorities continue investigating. The scope of the allegations against him has yet to be fully determined.

Victims of sexual abuse often face confusion about where to turn once criminal charges are filed. To better understand the path survivors may take in Maryland, we spoke with Aaron Blank, a seasoned sexual abuse lawyer, about the legal actions available to those harmed by a youth pastor and how civil law can provide accountability beyond the criminal courts.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: For those who may have been abused by a youth pastor, what legal options are available under Maryland law?

Aaron Blank, Esq.: Survivors of childhood sexual abuse in Maryland now have far greater ability to seek accountability. Civil claims can be filed against both the individual accused and, in certain cases, the church or institution that employed them. Maryland recently removed the statute of limitations for child sex abuse claims, so even adults who were harmed years ago may still have the right to bring a case.

Banville: How do these civil cases differ from criminal prosecutions?

Blank: Criminal cases focus on punishment and protecting the public. Civil actions are survivor-led. They can provide financial compensation for therapy, medical costs, and emotional suffering, and they can also drive accountability from organizations that failed to keep children safe.

Banville: What steps should someone consider if they believe they were harmed but are unsure about moving forward?

Blank: Speaking confidentially with a lawyer experienced in abuse cases is often the first step. Survivors shouldn’t feel pressured, but they deserve to understand their rights and the resources available to them.
