Pastor in Georgia Indicted on Federal Child Sex Crime Charges

A federal grand jury in southern Georgia has indicted 35-year-old Bernadel Semexant, of Hinesville, on multiple charges related to crimes involving a minor. The indictment, returned on September 10, 2025, lists five charges: enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity, abuse of a minor, transfer of obscene material to a minor, receipt of child pornography, and possession of child pornography.

House of Prayer Christian Church Pastor Accused of Child Abuse

Investigators believe Semexant worked as a pastor at various House of Prayer Christian Churches (HOPCC) across the country. His alleged role within the church network has raised concerns about whether other individuals may have been affected. Federal authorities are calling for potential witnesses or victims to report any information.

FBI Calls the Case a Betrayal of Trust

Paul Brown, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Atlanta Division, said the charges represent a severe violation of community trust. “The allegations in this indictment reflect a profound betrayal of trust by an individual in a position of spiritual authority. The FBI is committed to pursuing those who exploit children and ensuring they are held accountable,” Brown stated.

Authorities Urge Information From the Public

Both the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office continue investigating the case and are urging the public to step forward with any relevant details. Officials emphasize that community cooperation could help protect other potential victims connected to Semexant or others serving within HOPCC.

Justice for Families After Abuse by a Pastor

When allegations of abuse involve a trusted community leader, families are often left searching for answers about what steps they can take. To provide guidance, we spoke with John Bey, an experienced Georgia abuse lawyer, about the rights of survivors and the legal avenues available to hold both individuals and institutions accountable.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: When cases like this surface, many victims and families may feel overwhelmed. What are the immediate legal paths available for someone who believes they were harmed?

John Bey, Esq.: Victims have both criminal and civil avenues. While criminal cases are led by prosecutors, civil claims allow survivors to directly hold institutions and individuals accountable for the harm done. This can include the pastor himself and, in some circumstances, the church organization if it failed to prevent or ignored warning signs.

Banville: Many survivors worry about coming forward years after the abuse. How does Georgia law address that?

Bey: Georgia has expanded legal timelines for childhood abuse cases. Even if the abuse happened years ago, survivors may still have the right to file a claim. It’s important they speak with a lawyer who can review the timing and circumstances under current state laws.

Banville: What message would you share with families watching this case unfold?

Bey: They should know they do not have to suffer in silence. Confidential consultations are available, and survivors deserve answers, accountability, and the possibility of financial compensation to support their recovery.
