Legal Options Explained: Maryland Attorney Discusses Pastor Abuse Cases
Families of children harmed by clergy often face uncertainty about what steps they can take. To provide guidance, we spoke with Maryland sexual abuse lawyer Aaron Blank, who explained the types of legal actions available to survivors and how families can hold both individuals and institutions accountable.
Laurence Banville, Esq.: Aaron, when someone comes forward after being abused by a pastor, what legal steps are open to them here in Maryland?
Aaron Blank, Esq.: Victims can pursue both criminal and civil cases. The criminal prosecution is led by the state, but survivors also have the right to file civil lawsuits against the abuser and in some cases the institution that allowed the abuse to occur. Civil claims may provide financial compensation for therapy, medical treatment, and the long-term impact of the abuse.
Banville: What role does the church itself play in potential lawsuits?
Blank: If evidence shows the church failed to properly supervise its staff, ignored complaints, or created an environment where abuse could continue, the institution may be held accountable in civil court. That can be just as important as holding the individual responsible, because it addresses the systemic failures that allow abuse to happen.
Banville: For survivors who might still be afraid or unsure, what is the first step?
Blank: Reaching out to an experienced attorney is key. We can explain filing deadlines, gather evidence, and stand beside survivors throughout the process. They don’t have to go through it alone, and early legal guidance often makes a meaningful difference in building a strong case.
