Bainbridge, GA – A Georgia day care worker has been arrested after authorities say surveillance footage revealed her attacking a toddler under her care. The arrest came after the boy’s father, U.S. Marine Cory Weeks, posted heartbreaking photos on social media showing his 1-year-old son, Clay, with a black eye, a swollen cheek, and several facial cuts.
Weeks said his sons, Clay and Wyatt, had only just begun attending Little Blessings Child Care in Bainbridge, near the Florida border, when the alleged abuse took place on Monday. In his statement, he described the discovery as “every parent’s worst nightmare.”
Police Confirm Surveillance Evidence of Child Abuse
Decatur County investigators confirmed that surveillance cameras at the facility captured the incident, which played a critical role in the case. The footage reportedly contradicted early claims that another child had caused Clay’s injuries with a toy. Investigators say the evidence instead pointed directly to Yvette Thurston, 54, a worker at the center.
Thurston now faces three counts of first-degree child abuse and one count of first-degree aggravated battery, according to WDRW. She was promptly taken into custody.
Assaulted Child Treated at Hospital
Following the incident, Clay was rushed to Memorial Hospital and Manor, where medical staff treated his injuries. Weeks said watching the footage was “not for the faint-hearted,” describing the violence against his son as shocking and deliberate. He also vowed that his family would push to make sure the case is not ignored.
State Officials and Facility Respond to Daycare Abuse
A spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning confirmed the employee has been terminated from the day care program and stated the agency is working closely with law enforcement as the investigation continues. At this time, representatives for Little Blessings Child Care have not responded to requests for comment.
Legal Perspectives on Day Care Abuse Cases
In the aftermath of the arrest, questions are being raised about what legal recourse families of child abuse victims at day care centers have. Attorney Laurence Banville spoke with experienced Georgia daycare abuse lawyer John Bey to discuss the steps parents can take if faced with such a devastating situation.
Laurence Banville, Esq.: When parents discover their child has been harmed at a licensed day care, what legal options are available to them?
John Bey, Esq.: Families can take both criminal and civil action. On the criminal side, prosecutors handle the charges against the individual accused of abuse. But in many cases, parents may also file a civil lawsuit against the facility itself, especially if there were lapses in supervision, hiring practices, or safety protocols that enabled the abuse.
Banville: So the liability doesn’t just stop with the employee accused of the act?
Bey: Exactly. A day care has a duty to provide a safe environment. If a facility failed to properly vet staff, ignored warning signs, or didn’t put adequate protections in place, they may share responsibility. That allows families to pursue damages not just for medical costs, but also emotional trauma and long-term treatment a child may need.
Banville: What would you say to parents who are hesitant to come forward?
Bey: I’d remind them they’re not alone. Taking legal action isn’t just about their child—it’s about protecting others. These cases often prompt investigations that uncover broader issues within a facility, which can prevent future harm.
