Austin, TX - A Harlandale Independent School District teacher has been arrested on a charge of sexual assault of a child, according to the San Antonio Police Department. Edwardo Cantu, 46, a teacher at McCollum High School, was taken into custody on campus on Tuesday in connection with an alleged assault involving a teenage student.

Alleged Assault and Timeline

Investigators said the alleged assault occurred on November 10 and involved Cantu and a teenage student. Police indicated the assault may have happened on school grounds at McCollum High School, and campus administrators became aware of the allegation on November 19 through word of mouth.

Arrest on Campus and Police Findings

Officers obtained a warrant for Cantu following the report and arrested him during school hours at McCollum High School without incident, according to SAPD. Police stated that Cantu did not have any prior criminal history and noted that investigators believe there may be additional victims, urging anyone with information to contact SAPD’s Special Victims Unit at 210-207-2313.

District Response and Student Support

Harlandale ISD confirmed that a staff member at McCollum High School was taken into custody after an allegation was reported to law enforcement and said all required procedures were followed once the report was made, including notifying law enforcement and external agencies. The district stated it will continue cooperating with investigators and will have a crisis team at McCollum High School to support students.

Teacher’s Role and Ongoing Investigation

Police identified Cantu as a teacher at McCollum High School, and the school’s website lists him as a mariachi teacher. Authorities said additional information was not immediately available, and the investigation remains active as officials continue to review the case and seek potential further victims.

As the community grapples with recent allegations of abuse involving a teacher at Harlandale ISD, many victims and their families may feel overwhelmed by their circumstances. To provide clarity on the available legal avenues, we spoke with Anjali Nigam, an experienced sexual abuse lawyer in Texas. She shares important information on what options victims can take to seek justice and support in their healing process.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: Following this case involving a teacher and student, what steps can victims of school-related abuse take right away under Texas law?

Anjali Nigam, Esq.: Victims should report to law enforcement or DFPS within 24 hours if possible, as schools face strict deadlines under SB 571 for public schools. They can pursue civil lawsuits against the teacher and district for damages for medical costs, therapy, pain, and negligence in supervision or reporting failures.

Banville: Does Title IX play a role here for student protections?

Nigam: Yes, schools must offer supportive measures like counseling and class changes regardless of investigation outcomes, plus investigate complaints promptly through their Title IX coordinator. Families can also claim compensation for emotional distress and lost wages from both the abuser and negligent institutions.
