Allen, TX - A well-known figure skating coach in North Texas has been arrested after police say he engaged in inappropriate relationships with two of his athletes. Allen police confirmed that 47-year-old Benjamin Shroats was taken into custody at his home on Tuesday evening following a report filed on February 15.

According to investigators, one of the alleged relationships began when the athlete was a minor. Shroats has been charged with one count of indecency with a child and one count of sexual assault. Authorities said the sexual assault charge relates to a second victim.

High-Profile Coaching Background

Shroats has trained several competitive skaters throughout his career, including 2026 Olympic gold medalist Amber Glenn of Plano. He is currently being held at the Collin County Detention Center on bonds totaling $200,000.

Police have not released additional details, citing an active and ongoing investigation.

Dallas Figure Skating Club Responds

Following the arrest, the Dallas Figure Skating Club issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to safety and clarifying its relationship with coaches.

“We know news like this is upsetting, and we want our families to know we take concerns involving our members and the adult coaches who train them very seriously. The safety and welfare of children is our top priority,” the statement read.

The organization noted that it does not employ or supervise private coaches, as all lesson arrangements are handled directly between families and individual instructors. The Club also does not own or manage ice rinks used for training.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case or concerns about possible additional victims to contact the Allen Police Department for assistance.

Parents across North Texas are grappling with fear and uncertainty as allegations of sexual abuse by a figure skating coach raise urgent questions about how to protect their children and hold wrongdoers accountable. In this interview, experienced Texas sexual abuse lawyer Anjali Nigam discusses the legal steps families can take when a coach is accused of abusing athletes, including how criminal investigations intersect with civil lawsuits, what compensation may be available, and how the legal process can be navigated in a way that prioritizes a child’s safety and emotional well-being.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: For families hearing about allegations like these, what is the very first step they should consider if they suspect their child was abused by a coach?

Anjali Nigam, Esq.: The immediate priority is the child’s safety and well-being. That often means removing the child from contact with the coach, arranging medical or psychological care if needed, and then making a report to law enforcement so a formal investigation can begin.

Banville: Beyond the criminal process, what civil legal options might be available to families in Texas in a situation like this?

Nigam: In many cases, families can file a civil lawsuit against the individual coach, and potentially against other parties who may have failed to act on warning signs or failed to implement proper safety measures. Civil claims can seek compensation for therapy, medical care, and long-term impacts such as emotional trauma, while also pushing organizations to improve their policies.

Banville: Some parents are afraid to come forward because they worry it will be too difficult for their child. What do you say to them?

Nigam: No family should have to go through this alone. An experienced attorney can help shield the child from unnecessary retraumatization by using victim-sensitive procedures, working with trauma-informed professionals, and handling as much of the legal process as possible on the family’s behalf. Reaching out for help can be an important step in both accountability and healing.

Banville: If a parent suspects abuse but doesn’t have proof, is it still worth contacting a lawyer?

Nigam: Yes. Parents don’t need to have everything figured out before they call. A lawyer can walk them through their options, help assess what evidence might exist, and coordinate with law enforcement. Even an initial consultation can give families clarity on what to watch for and how to protect their child moving forward.
