Daycare Worker, Catalina Baldwin, Accused of Assaulting Infants at Oaks Early Learning Center in Collegeville, PA

Phoenixville, PA – A Montgomery County woman accused of assaulting two babies at a Collegeville daycare appeared in court Wednesday morning for a preliminary hearing, as one child continues to fight serious injuries in the hospital.

Lead Caregiver Arrested After Infant Found Unresponsive

Catalina Baldwin, 37, was arrested on July 31 and charged with multiple counts after two children, ages 5 and 7 months, were seriously injured while under her care at the Oaks Early Learning Center. Baldwin, employed at the center for five years and serving as lead caregiver in the infant room, was escorted into district court in shackles.

Testimony Details Graphic Injuries and Phone Evidence

Prosecutors presented evidence including testimony from an Upper Providence police detective and a physician from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Investigators say police were called to the daycare on July 9 when a 7‑month‑old girl was found unresponsive. Doctors determined she had extensive head injuries requiring part of her skull to be removed to relieve pressure, concluding the injuries were caused by traumatic force.

Further investigation revealed a deleted text message on Baldwin’s phone referring to the injured child as a “nightmare,” as well as a search for “shaken baby syndrome.” Authorities also connected Baldwin to a separate incident in May, when a 5‑month‑old girl suffered a traumatic injury to her mouth. Medical staff described the injury as highly concerning and not accidental.

Bail, Restrictions, and Next Court Date

The Oaks Early Learning Center has declined to comment on the case. Baldwin posted bail following her arrest and is now under electronic monitoring. As part of her release conditions, she is barred from being around children without supervision. Her next court appearance is scheduled for October.

When allegations of abuse surface in a childcare setting, families are often left searching for answers about their rights and the steps they can take to protect their children. Pennsylvania sexual abuse lawyer Guy D’Andrea discusses the legal options available to parents whose children have been harmed by a caregiver, including how civil claims can hold both individuals and institutions accountable.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: When families learn their child has been harmed by a caregiver, what immediate steps should they consider from a legal standpoint?

Guy D’Andrea, Esq.: The first priority is the child’s medical care and safety. From a legal perspective, parents should know they have the right to bring civil claims against both the individual caregiver and, in many cases, the daycare itself. Facilities can be held liable if they failed to properly supervise, train, or screen employees. These cases aren’t just about holding the individual accountable—they’re about ensuring the institution takes responsibility as well.

Banville: How do cases like this usually progress once formal charges have been filed?

D’Andrea: The criminal case will address whether the caregiver is found guilty and sentenced. But families don’t have to wait for a criminal conviction to move forward with a civil lawsuit. Civil claims can seek compensation for medical expenses, therapy, long‑term care needs, and the emotional harm the child and family have endured.

Banville: What message would you give to families who might be fearful of taking legal action?

D’Andrea: Many families feel overwhelmed or hesitant, but it’s important to understand they’re not alone. Legal action can provide resources for the child’s recovery and force change within the daycare industry. Speaking with an attorney can help parents understand their rights and take steps that protect both their own family and other children in the future.
