Paterson, NJ - A Passaic County teacher has been arrested after prosecutors say he sexually assaulted a 9-year-old student during school hours at Paterson Public School No. 25.

Arrest and Charges

Paul Yang, 32, of Leonia, was taken into custody on Wednesday. Authorities confirmed he is now facing multiple charges connected to the alleged abuse of a fourth-grade student. Police say the assault happened inside his classroom during the school day.

Report Sparks Investigation

The investigation began after the young victim reported an “incident of abuse” to officials earlier that day. Detectives from the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office worked with local police to gather evidence and interview witnesses.

School District Response

According to the Paterson School District’s website, Yang is listed as a fourth-grade teacher at the elementary school. District officials have not commented publicly on his current employment status but said they are cooperating fully with law enforcement.

When allegations of sexual abuse arise within a school setting, victims and their families often struggle to understand their rights and possible legal actions. In this conversation, New Jersey sexual abuse lawyer Eric Weitz shares how victims can hold both perpetrators and institutions accountable through the justice system.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: When a family learns their child has been harmed by a teacher, what immediate steps should they consider taking legally?

Eric Weitz, Esq.: The first step is always to ensure the child’s safety and report the incident to law enforcement. After that, families can work with an attorney to determine if the school district or its employees failed to protect the student. Civil lawsuits can help hold both individuals and institutions accountable.

Banville: Can victims pursue a case against the school itself?

Weitz: Yes. If the school ignored warning signs, failed background checks, or mishandled prior complaints, the district can be held liable. Legal action not only helps families recover damages but can also prompt schools to strengthen their policies and safeguard other students.
