PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL — The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is asking for community assistance after a girls’ volleyball coach was arrested last week on serious charges involving a student.

Deputies said Arturo “Arty” Gonzalez was taken into custody Friday. He faces charges of lewd or lascivious touching and offense against a student by an authority figure. Gonzalez served as a coach for a local high school girls’ volleyball team and operated a private volleyball club for girls in the area.

School Confirms Employment Termination for Accused Coach

The school district has not released the name of the campus where Gonzalez coached. However, Royal Palm Beach High School Principal Shakeica Robinson confirmed in a message to families that Gonzalez is no longer employed with the district.

“I am writing to inform you that girls’ volleyball coach, Mr. Arturo Gonzalez, is no longer employed with the School District of Palm Beach County,” Robinson stated. “Because this is a personnel matter, we are unable to provide further details at this time. The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority.”

Investigation Continues as Detectives Identify Possible Additional Victims

Gonzalez was released Saturday after posting a $50,000 bond, according to online jail records. Detectives believe there may be additional victims and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Those with knowledge of the case can reach Detective Darrell Diez at 561-688-4143 or via email at DiezD@pbso.org. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS.

Ongoing Pattern Raises Concerns

This marks the second time in one week that a coach employed by the School District of Palm Beach County has been arrested on allegations involving inappropriate behavior with a minor, prompting growing concern among parents and district officials about oversight of youth athletics programs.

When allegations arise against a coach accused of abusing a student, families often face uncertainty about what steps to take. In a recent conversation, Florida lawyer Michael Haggard, known for handling complex abuse cases, discussed how victims and their families can take legal action. Haggard outlined available options, from cooperating with law enforcement to pursuing civil claims against responsible institutions that may have failed to protect students.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: Many families feel lost after allegations like these surface. What immediate options are available to them?

Michael Haggard, Esq.: Families can contact law enforcement and also consider civil action against the coach, the school district, or any organization that may have ignored warning signs. The legal system allows victims to seek accountability through both criminal and civil routes. Consulting an attorney early helps preserve evidence and determine who may bear responsibility.

Banville: What kind of claims might be available in situations like this?

Haggard: Depending on the facts, families may seek damages for emotional harm, negligence, or lack of proper supervision. The goal is accountability—ensuring institutions take their duty to protect minors seriously.

Banville: What advice would you give families who are hesitant to come forward?

Haggard: It’s understandable to feel hesitant, but taking action is an important step in protecting others and finding closure. Families should know they are not alone, and there are legal professionals who can guide them through the process with compassion and confidentiality.
