San Diego, CA – Christopher Scott Preston, 55, has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting multiple women while posing as a licensed massage therapist in San Diego. Preston operated a business called 360 Wellness and Consulting in Mira Mesa for six years using a fabricated license number.

Allegations of Sexual Assault by Unlicensed Masseuse

Three women have come forward accusing Preston of sexual assault during massage sessions. The first report was made in August 2023, followed by two more in December and April. The victims allege that Preston groped them and sexually assaulted them with a foreign object.

San Diego Police Sex Crimes Unit Lt. Dan Sayasan stated that a key element in the investigation was a Groupon advertisement offering 50% off massages, which Preston used to attract clients. The ad included fake reviews, business hours, and the fraudulent license number.

Groupon’s Response to Massage Parlor Sexual Assault Allegations

Groupon has removed Preston’s promotion from their platform and is refunding all outstanding vouchers. Mike Tepeli, a Groupon spokesperson, emphasized the company’s commitment to customer safety and cooperation with authorities.

Legal Proceedings and Potential Consequences

Preston faces up to 11 years in prison if convicted. He has been released from custody under strict conditions, including wearing a GPS monitor and staying away from his former workplace.

School Connection Raises Additional Concerns

The case has taken on new dimensions with the revelation of Preston’s involvement in the local education system. Preston had been working as a football coach at University City High School. This information adds a layer of complexity to the case, potentially expanding the scope of the investigation. Preston’s arrest near the UC High campus on Wednesday resulted in five felony charges.

In response to these developments, the school’s principal promptly informed parents about Preston’s arrest and his subsequent removal from his position. The principal’s note stated, “The employee has been placed on unpaid leave and is no longer associated with our school”. This swift action by the school administration underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the priority placed on student safety.

Call for Additional Victims

Authorities believe there may be more victims and are encouraging them to come forward. Lt. Sayasan acknowledged that victims often hesitate to report such incidents due to embarrassment or uncertainty about the nature of the massage.

Police are urging the public to be cautious when responding to online advertisements for services. Lt. Sayasan advised, “If it sounds too good to be true, it’s probably not true,” and recommended verifying business legitimacy and licensing before proceeding with any services.

Seeking Justice: Legal Options for Massage Therapy Sexual Assault Survivors

The recent arrest of Christopher Scott Preston, an unlicensed massage therapist in San Diego, has brought attention to the serious issue of sexual assault in massage settings. As more victims come forward, questions arise about the legal options available to those who have experienced such traumatic events. To address these concerns, we spoke with Jason Amala, a California attorney with extensive experience in sex abuse cases. In this interview, Amala offers valuable information on the legal rights of victims, the process of holding negligent parties accountable, and practical advice for those who have suffered sexual assault during a massage. His insights provide a roadmap for survivors seeking to navigate the complex legal landscape and find a path to healing and justice.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: What legal options are available for individuals who have been sexually assaulted by massage therapists?

Jason Amala, Esq.: Victims have several avenues for legal recourse. They can file criminal charges against the perpetrator, but they can also pursue civil lawsuits against both the individual therapist and the business employing them. These civil cases can help survivors obtain compensation for medical expenses, therapy costs, and emotional trauma.

Banville: How can negligent parties be held accountable in these situations?

Amala: Massage establishments have a duty to ensure client safety. If they fail to conduct proper background checks, ignore previous complaints, or neglect to implement adequate safety measures, they can be held liable for negligence. We investigate whether the business knew or should have known about any red flags regarding the therapist’s behavior.

Banville: What advice would you give to someone who has experienced sexual assault during a massage?

Amala: First and foremost, report the incident to law enforcement. Then, seek medical attention and counseling. It’s also important to document everything and avoid showering or washing clothes immediately after the incident to preserve evidence. Finally, consult with an experienced attorney who can guide you through the legal process and protect your rights.
