Essex, MD – A physical education teacher at Deep Creek Middle School in Essex is facing serious accusations after police say he sexually assaulted at least two students on school property.

Baltimore County Teacher Arrested on Sex Offense Charges

Roger Myers, 61, was taken into custody on multiple sex offense and assault charges. Authorities report that the alleged incidents occurred at the school, where Myers has been employed since July 2024. He has worked within Baltimore County Public Schools since 1996.

School Responds and Offers Support

Principal Laura Kelly informed families that Myers has been on administrative leave since January, when the school first learned of the investigation. Kelly described the charges as “deeply troubling” and reaffirmed the district’s commitment to maintaining high standards of conduct. Counseling services are being made available to students.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Appeal

Myers was released on recognizance Monday, according to court officials. Police are asking anyone with information or who believes they may be a victim to contact investigators.

Legal Pathways for Survivors: Maryland Attorney Explains Rights After School Sexual Abuse

When allegations of sexual abuse surface in schools, survivors and their families often face a maze of questions about what steps to take next. In this interview, Aaron Blank, a Maryland sexual abuse attorney, outlines the legal options available to those harmed by a middle school teacher and explains how survivors can access both justice and support.

Laurence Banville: Aaron, what actions can a survivor of sexual abuse by a teacher take under Maryland law?

Aaron Blank, Esq.: Survivors have the right to report the abuse to law enforcement, which can lead to criminal charges against the perpetrator. Beyond the criminal case, they can also file a civil lawsuit against both the individual and the school district if there is evidence the school failed to protect students or ignored warning signs. Maryland law allows survivors to seek compensation for emotional distress, therapy costs, and other damages resulting from the abuse.

Banville: Are there time limits for bringing a civil case?

Blank: Yes, but Maryland has extended the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse cases. Even if the abuse happened years ago, survivors may still have the opportunity to file a claim. It’s important to consult with an attorney to understand the specific deadlines and options based on each case.

Banville: What support is available for survivors during this process?

Blank: Survivors can access counseling and support services through the school or community organizations. Legal teams often help connect clients with these resources while guiding them through the legal process to ensure their rights are protected.
