Pickerington, OH – A 34-year-old middle school track and wrestling coach from the Johnstown-Monroe School District has been arrested and placed on unpaid administrative leave following allegations of sexual battery. Kory Ross was taken into custody on Monday after a complaint was filed in the Fairfield County Common Pleas Court.

An affidavit reveals that the incident involved a student at Pickerington Ridgeview Junior High School, where Ross had previously worked. A spokesperson for Pickerington Local Schools confirmed that Ross resigned from their district effective April 1, 2023.

Johnstown-Monroe Coach Arrested on Sexual Battery Charges

The charges against Ross allege that he engaged in sexual conduct with a student while employed at a school where the student was enrolled or attended. The Johnstown-Monroe School District was notified of his arrest on Monday morning, and he was subsequently charged with one count of sexual battery.

Kory Ross Faces Allegations from Previous Employment

Superintendent Dr. Philip Wagner released a statement addressing the situation: “The allegations resulting in Mr. Ross’ arrest stem from events dating back to September 2023, prior to Ross’ employment by Johnstown-Monroe, and to our best knowledge do not involve a Johnstown-Monroe student.” The district hired Ross in October 2024, more than a year after the alleged incidents began.

Previous Employment and Ongoing Investigation

The Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the allegations. Meanwhile, the Johnstown-Monroe School District has reassured families that all coaches undergo a rigorous background check process before employment, as required by law.

District Takes Swift Action

In response to the arrest, the Johnstown-Monroe School District has placed Ross on unpaid administrative leave. The district emphasizes that student and staff safety is their highest priority and has stated they will cooperate fully with law enforcement regarding this matter.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities encourage anyone with information related to this case to come forward and assist in the ongoing inquiry.

Legal Expert Discusses Options for Victims of Sexual Abuse by Coaches

When allegations of sexual misconduct arise in schools, they leave communities searching for answers and victims grappling with the emotional and legal aftermath. In an interview with Ohio school abuse attorney John Bey, we explore the legal avenues available to those impacted by abuse at the hands of trusted figures like coaches, highlighting steps victims and their families can take to seek accountability and support.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: What legal recourse do victims have in cases like this?

John Bey, Esq.: Victims of sexual abuse by school staff have several legal options. They can file civil lawsuits against the perpetrator and potentially the school district. These lawsuits can seek compensation for emotional trauma, therapy costs, and other damages resulting from the abuse.

Banville: How does the timing of the abuse affect potential cases?

Bey: Ohio has specific statutes of limitations for sexual abuse cases. However, recent changes in the law have extended the time frame for victims to come forward. It’s important for survivors to consult with an attorney as soon as possible to understand their rights and options.

Banville: What advice would you give to families affected by such incidents?

Bey: I urge families to seek legal counsel promptly. An experienced attorney can guide them through the complex legal process, help preserve evidence, and ensure their rights are protected. It’s also important for victims to seek appropriate counseling and support services.
