Colonia, NJ – A Middlesex County physician previously accused of sexual contact with patients is now facing additional charges after a state investigation uncovered further alleged offenses in multiple counties.
Doctor Faces New Charges in Widening Patient Assault Case
Dr. Gurvindra Johal, 57, of Colonia, has been charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault, 11 counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, and one count each of falsifying or tampering with records and destruction, falsification, or alteration of records related to medical care. The announcement was made by state Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin.
Expanded Indictment for Dr. Gurvindra Johal
The new charges stem from alleged incidents in Essex and Monmouth counties, expanding on previous allegations from Middlesex County. Authorities say Johal was first charged in 2023 after a patient at Amboy Urgent Care in Perth Amboy reported inappropriate touching. The investigation soon revealed additional victims who claimed similar misconduct at the same facility, as well as others who alleged sexual assault.
Alleged Misconduct Spans Multiple Counties
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the investigation found more victims in urgent care centers in Newark and Freehold. Johal is accused of sexually assaulting and inappropriately touching patients during medical exams at these locations. The charges further allege that Johal attempted to falsify medical records, including altering documentation to indicate a medical assistant was present during an examination when that was not originally the case.
Legal Consequences and Official Response
Second-degree charges carry a potential sentence of 5 to 10 years in state prison and a fine of up to $150,000, while fourth-degree offenses could result in up to 18 months in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Division of Criminal Justice Director Theresa Hilton commented, “Taking advantage of the doctor-patient relationship for sexual gratification, as is charged in this case, is completely unacceptable and will be met with the full force of our office.” Attorney General Platkin emphasized the importance of patient trust and the seriousness of the allegations, stating that such conduct will not be tolerated.
Johal’s medical license was previously suspended following the initial charges in 2023. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are urging any additional victims or witnesses to come forward.

In this interview, an experienced sexual abuse lawyer explains the legal avenues available to those harmed by a medical professional, offering clear guidance and support for anyone considering their next move.
Laurence Banville, Esq.: Stewart, when someone has been abused by a doctor, what legal steps can they take to hold that individual accountable?
Ryan Stewart, Esq.: Victims have the right to file a civil lawsuit against the doctor for damages related to the abuse. This can include compensation for medical expenses, emotional distress, lost wages, and other related costs. In many cases, victims can also bring claims against the medical facility if it failed to properly supervise or respond to complaints about the doctor’s behavior.
Banville: What should victims do right after experiencing or discovering abuse?
Ryan: It’s important to document everything—keep records of any communication, medical visits, and symptoms or emotional effects. Victims should also report the abuse to authorities and seek support from trusted individuals or organizations. Consulting with a lawyer early can help protect their rights and ensure key evidence is preserved.
Banville: Are there time limits for filing these types of claims in New Jersey?
Ryan: Yes, New Jersey has specific statutes of limitations for sexual abuse cases, but there are exceptions, especially for minors or in situations where the abuse was discovered later. An attorney can help determine the deadlines and guide victims through the process.
