Palatka, FL – A Palatka pastor is facing serious criminal charges after allegations surfaced of an inappropriate relationship with a child. The case has left the local faith community reeling, with former church members expressing shock and disappointment.
Pastor Arrested Following Allegations of Sexual Battery Involving a Minor
On April 16, Pastor Leo Parker of Emerge Church surrendered to the Palatka Police Department after detectives issued a warrant for his arrest. The investigation began after police received a report earlier this month regarding Parker’s alleged conduct with a minor. Detectives interviewed multiple individuals and collected physical evidence as part of their inquiry.
Allegations Span Several Years
According to authorities, Parker is accused of engaging in sexual acts with a child who was between the ages of 12 and 18 during the alleged incidents. The victim reported that the inappropriate behavior began when she was just 12 or 13 years old and continued for several years. She described being shown explicit material, touched inappropriately during church trips, and coerced into sexual acts at various locations, including church property and public parks.
The victim stated she tried to report the abuse to a church youth leader at age 16, but her claims were not believed. She later confided in her mother, which led to police involvement. Investigators have gathered text messages, photographs, and other digital evidence as part of the case.
Shock and Disbelief in the Community
The arrest has deeply affected the congregation and the surrounding neighborhood. Neighbor Doris Clark described the situation as “pathetic and pitiful.” Alvoid Maple Sr., a friend of Parker’s family, said he was stunned by the accusations but noted that rumors had been circulating among church members. “And now God going to deal with it,” Maple Sr. said.
Jason Barnett, a former member of Emerge Church, expressed disbelief that the man who once preached to him could be facing such charges. “Most people that are pastors, we look up to them. They are a man of God, and we try to put our trust in these pastors. But sometimes you have to be suspicious of things because they flesh just like everybody else,” Barnett said.
Legal Action and Continuing Investigation
Parker was initially held on a $100,000 bond but was released Thursday afternoon, according to jail records. The Palatka Police Department is continuing its investigation and has not ruled out the possibility of additional victims. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information or concerns to reach out.
Community Awaits Further Developments
As the investigation continues, the Palatka community is left grappling with the fallout from the arrest of a once-trusted religious leader. Police are urging parents and others who may have information about Parker’s conduct to contact the Palatka Police Department.
Florida Attorney Explains Legal Rights for Victims of Pastor Sexual Abuse
Survivors of sexual abuse by religious leaders often face confusion and fear about what steps to take next. In this interview, attorney Mike Haggard discusses the legal options available to those harmed by a pastor, offering clear guidance on reporting abuse, seeking justice through the courts, and finding support during a difficult time.
Laurence Banville: Mike, when someone comes forward with allegations of abuse against a pastor in Florida, what immediate steps should they consider?
Mike Haggard, Esq.: The first thing is to ensure their safety and well-being. After that, it’s important to contact law enforcement so the allegations can be properly investigated. Survivors should also reach out to an experienced sexual abuse attorney who can help them understand their rights and guide them through the process, whether that involves a criminal case, a civil lawsuit, or both.
Banville: What legal options are available for survivors beyond the criminal process?
Haggard: Survivors can pursue a civil lawsuit against the individual and, in some cases, the institution if there was negligence in supervision or failure to protect. Civil cases can help survivors seek compensation for the harm they’ve suffered, including emotional distress, therapy costs, and other damages. Our firm offers confidential consultations and supports survivors every step of the way.
Banville: How do you support clients through what can be a very difficult process?
Haggard: We provide a compassionate environment for survivors to share their story. Our team handles the legal complexities, gathers evidence, and negotiates with responsible parties. If necessary, we take the case to trial to fight for the justice and compensation our clients deserve.
