Cambridge Springs, PA – A former corrections officer from Meadville, Alfonzia Newsome, is facing serious allegations of sexual misconduct involving two female inmates at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Cambridge Springs. He has been ordered to stand trial following a preliminary hearing on Tuesday morning before Magisterial District Judge Lincoln Zilhaver in Vernon Township.

Multiple Charges Filed Against Prison Guard, Newsome

Newsome, 49, is charged with three counts each of institutional sexual assault, indecent assault with forcible compulsion, and harassment. The accusations stem from incidents that allegedly occurred between December 11, 2022, and August 16, 2023, while he was on duty as a corrections officer. According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the investigation began in July 2023 after several inmates reported allegations against him.

Sexual Assault Allegations Detailed in Arrest Affidavit

Court documents reveal that two inmates, identified as victims in the arrest affidavit, were interviewed multiple times by police. Both women alleged that Newsome inappropriately touched them below the waist while standing at the entrance of their cells. One victim reported being assaulted on two separate occasions, highlighting the severity of the claims against him.

Employment History and Current Status of Correctional Officer

Newsome’s employment with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections and at SCI Cambridge Springs ended on November 30, 2023. He began his career at SCI Albion, a state prison for men, in June 2020 and transferred to SCI Cambridge Springs in December 2022. As he awaits trial during the November criminal trial term of the Crawford County Court of Common Pleas, Newsome remains free on nonmonetary bond.

Understanding Legal Rights for Victims of Prison Sexual Abuse

In a recent conversation, attorney Laurence Banville spoke with Guy D’Andrea, a lawyer experienced in handling sexual abuse cases, to explore the legal avenues available to individuals who have suffered abuse at the hands of prison corrections officers. Their discussion highlights the steps victims can take to seek compensation and accountability, emphasizing the importance of legal support in navigating these complex cases.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: Thank you for joining us today. Can you outline the legal rights available to individuals who have been sexually abused by a corrections officer?

Guy D’Andrea, Esq.: Certainly, Laurence. Victims of such abuse have the right to pursue legal action against the perpetrator and potentially the institution where the abuse occurred. This can involve filing a civil lawsuit to seek compensation for damages and to hold the responsible parties accountable for their actions.

Banville: What steps can victims take to ensure their case is heard and justice is served?

D’Andrea: It’s vital for victims to engage with an attorney experienced in handling sexual abuse cases. An attorney can guide them through the legal process, help gather evidence, and build a strong case. This support is crucial in ensuring that the victims’ voices are heard and that they receive the justice they deserve.

Banville: How can institutions be held accountable in these situations?

D’Andrea: Institutions can be held liable if they failed to properly supervise their employees, ignored warning signs, or did not respond appropriately to reports of misconduct. This includes ensuring adequate training and background checks for staff.

Banville: Any advice for those unsure about taking legal action?

D’Andrea: I encourage victims to consult with a qualified sexual abuse attorney. They can provide a confidential and supportive environment to discuss the situation and explore the best legal options. It’s important to remember that there are legal avenues available to seek justice and hold negligent parties accountable.
