Burlington, NJ – Shawn Tracey, 44, of Mount Holly, was taken into custody Tuesday following allegations of repeated sexual abuse involving a child under the age of 13. Police and the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest Friday, detailing a series of charges that include 10 counts of aggravated sexual assault, 13 counts of debauching the morals of a child, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of showing obscene material to a minor.

Deacon Arrested on Multiple Child Sex Abuse Charges

Tracey is described by the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office as a deacon at Burlington Seventh Day Adventist Church. However, the church’s pastor told Action News that Tracey is not a deacon but an active member of the congregation. Detectives allege Tracey abused the girl over a two-year period at several locations throughout Burlington County.

Community Reaction and Church Response to Church Member Accused of Repeated Child Sexual Assault

The allegations have deeply affected the local community and congregation. Paulette Gando, a Bergen County resident and woman of faith, expressed her heartbreak, saying, “To hear that news from being from people who have morals, standards, and ethics, and just overall, it’s heartbreaking.”

The NJ Conference of Seventh Day Adventists issued a statement calling the news “deeply distressing” and emphasized that the Burlington Church is committed to maintaining a safe and nurturing environment for all members, especially children and youth. Church leaders are now reviewing all safety protocols and safeguarding practices, and have called for prayer and compassion as the congregation navigates this situation.

Investigation Ongoing

There was no response at Tracey’s Mount Holly residence on Friday. Off camera, a neighbor described Tracey as “an alright guy,” a perception now challenged by the serious allegations.

Authorities are urging anyone who believes their child may have been affected to contact the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-265-5035. Tips can also be submitted online at tips@co.burlington.nj.us.

Legal Options for Survivors: Attorney Stewart Ryan Answers Key Questions

Survivors of sexual abuse by church members often face difficult decisions about how to move forward. Attorney Stewart Ryan, an experienced advocate for victims, sat down to discuss the legal avenues available for survivors of clergy abuse in New Jersey. Their conversation offers clear guidance on reporting abuse, filing civil claims, and understanding recent changes to the statute of limitations, helping survivors and their families make informed choices about their next steps.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: Stewart, when someone has experienced sexual abuse by a church member in New Jersey, what steps can they take to protect their rights?

Stewart Ryan, Esq.: Survivors have several legal options. They can report the abuse to law enforcement, which may lead to criminal charges, as we’ve seen in this case. In addition, New Jersey law allows survivors to file civil lawsuits against both the individual abuser and, in some cases, the institution if it failed to protect them or ignored warning signs.

Banville: How does the statute of limitations affect these cases?

Ryan: New Jersey has extended the statute of limitations for civil sexual abuse claims. Survivors now have more time to come forward, even years after the abuse occurred. This gives many people a chance to seek accountability and compensation for the harm they suffered.

Banville: What should survivors consider when deciding whether to take legal action?

Ryan: It’s important to consult with an attorney who understands both the legal process and the sensitive nature of these cases. Survivors should know that they have the right to confidentiality and support throughout the process. Legal action can provide a path to justice, closure, and potentially prevent future abuse.
