New Albany, OH – Gary Thomas Keesee Jr., 36, son of the co-pastors of Faith Life Church in New Albany and Powell, faces 27 felony counts, including 11 counts of rape, 11 counts of gross sexual imposition, and five counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. The indictment, handed down Monday in Knox County, alleges the crimes occurred between May 2002 and October 2011.

Three Victims Aged 6 to 15 at Time of Abuse by Church Leader’s Son

Licking County Prosecutor Jenny Wells, speaking during a Monday press conference at the Licking County sheriff’s office, confirmed there are three victims, all girls between the ages of 6 and 15 when the incidents took place. The victims were members of the church, though officials stated there is no evidence the abuse happened within church premises. Some victims have since relocated out of state.

Investigation Details and Arrest of Church Employee

Keesee held multiple roles within the church during the time frame of the alleged abuses, including media-related positions. Some incidents reportedly occurred while he was also a minor. Law enforcement has interviewed around 40 witnesses as the investigation continues. Keesee was arrested Friday at his residence near Johnstown. He is being held in Licking County jail with no bond set yet, and authorities regard him as a potential flight risk. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday in Knox County Common Pleas Court.

Focus on Abused Victims and Law Enforcement Response

Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp emphasized the importance of focusing on the victims amid public attention on the case. He noted that several agencies declined to investigate due to conflicts, prompting the Licking County Sheriff’s Office to take up the case in February after victims began coming forward in December. Sheriff Thorp stated the office’s goal was to ensure justice for those affected.

Church’s Response to Sexual Abuse Allegations

Gary and Drenda Keesee, the co-pastors of Faith Life Church, are also Gary Jr.’s parents, with Drenda serving as a Knox County Commissioner. The church’s attorney released a statement on Friday noting that the allegations concern events about two decades old and did not involve the church directly. The statement affirmed the church’s full cooperation with law enforcement and acknowledged the difficulty of the situation for the community and families involved.

Legal Options for Survivors of Abuse by Church Employees in Ohio

Many survivors of abuse by church employees face significant hurdles when deciding how to respond legally. Ohio sexual abuse lawyer John Bey offered insights on the rights survivors hold and the various legal avenues available to hold offenders—and potentially religious institutions—accountable. His knowledge provides guidance for those affected on navigating a complex legal landscape.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: When someone is sexually assaulted by a church employee, what legal paths are available to survivors?

John Bey, Esq.: Victims can file criminal charges against the perpetrator if the abuse is within the statute of limitations. Beyond that, they may have grounds for civil lawsuits against both the individual and potentially the church itself, especially if negligence can be shown.

Banville: How does the involvement of a religious institution affect these cases?

Bey: It can complicate things. Churches sometimes claim immunity, but courts have increasingly held them accountable if they knew or should have known about the abuse and failed to act. Survivors have the right to demand transparency and reparations.

Banville: What should victims consider when deciding to take legal action?

Bey: They should seek experienced legal counsel quickly to understand their rights and collect evidence. Emotional support is also vital during what can be a challenging process. The law aims to hold offenders responsible and provide some measure of closure for survivors.
