Child Sex Abuse Attorney Discusses Options in Wake of Mayor’s Arrest
In the aftermath of former University Park Mayor Joel Biermann’s arrest on child sexual abuse material charges, many families are grappling with questions about legal recourse and victim rights. To address these concerns, we spoke with Aaron Blank, a seasoned Maryland attorney specializing in sexual abuse cases. Blank offers valuable information on recent changes in state law that expand opportunities for survivors to seek compensation and hold perpetrators accountable. This interview aims to provide clear, actionable guidance for those affected by such crimes and highlight the importance of experienced legal representation in these sensitive matters.
Laurence Banville, Esq.: With the serious allegations against former University Park Mayor Joel Biermann, what legal rights do children have in cases of exploitation by a public official like a mayor?
Aaron Blank, Esq.: Children have significant legal protections under the law. They are entitled to be safe from abuse, and if exploitation occurs, they have the right to seek justice against those responsible. This includes both criminal and civil avenues.
Banville: What should parents do if they suspect their child has been exploited?
Blank: Parents should take any signs of abuse seriously and report their concerns to law enforcement immediately. It’s also wise to consult with an attorney who specializes in these cases to understand the available legal options.
Banville: Can you explain how parents can hold negligent parties accountable, especially in cases involving public officials?
Blank: Absolutely. Public officials have a responsibility to protect minors in their jurisdiction. If a public entity fails in that duty, parents can file lawsuits for negligence. This can lead to compensation for the victims and push for accountability within the community.
Banville: What advice do you have for families who may feel hesitant to take action?
Blank: It’s vital for families to know they have support. Taking action not only helps the individual victim but also contributes to the safety of others. Every step taken can foster change and bring attention to these critical issues.
