Wilcox County, GA – A shocking case of alleged child exploitation has emerged in Georgia, as former Wilcox County teacher Lorenzo Dennard, 34, was arrested on numerous charges related to sexual misconduct with minors.

Teacher Facing 81 Counts of Child Sex Crimes

Dennard, a resident of Atkinson County, Georgia, faces a staggering 77 counts of sexual exploitation of children. Additionally, he has been charged with three counts of electronically furnishing obscene material to a minor and one count of improper sexual contact by an employee.

The arrest came after the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to look into allegations of an inappropriate relationship between Dennard, a former teacher and coach, and a former student.

Following his arrest, Dennard was booked into the Wilcox County Jail. He has since been released on bond. The GBI is actively investigating the case, and upon completion, the case file will be handed over to the Crisp Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

Legal Rights for Victims of Teacher Sexual Abuse

In light of the recent arrest of the Georgia teacher, we sat down with John Bey, an experienced school sexual abuse lawyer, to discuss the legal avenues available for victims of sexual abuse by teachers. This conversation covered the rights of victims, the responsibilities of educational institutions, and the steps necessary to hold negligent parties accountable.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: Mr. Bey, what legal rights do victims of sexual abuse by teachers have?

John Bey, Esq.: Victims have several legal options. They can pursue criminal charges against the abuser, typically handled by law enforcement and prosecutors. Additionally, victims can file civil lawsuits against the abuser and potentially the school or organization that employed the teacher.

Banville: How can negligent parties be held accountable in these cases?

Bey: Schools and organizations can be held liable if they failed to conduct proper background checks, ignored warning signs, or didn’t implement adequate safeguards to protect students. This could include failure to supervise, negligent hiring, or failure to report suspected abuse. Victims can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, therapy costs, and pain and suffering.

Banville: What advice would you give to potential victims or their families?

Bey: I urge victims and their families to come forward and report abuse to law enforcement. It’s also advisable to consult with an experienced attorney who specializes in child sexual abuse cases. These lawyers can guide victims through the legal process, protect their rights, and help ensure that all responsible parties are held accountable.
