Sarasota, FL – Dr. Stephen Feig, the medical director at Sarasota’s Brain Wave Center, has been charged with sexual battery after police say he abused his position while treating a woman for pain and trauma. The Sarasota Police Department reports that the alleged assault occurred in 2023, and investigators believe there may be additional victims who have yet to come forward.
Victims Describe Pattern of Abuse by Doctor
According to police, Feig first met two young women at the Brain Wave Center, a facility established in 2007 to help those with depression, anxiety, ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities. Both women were seeking support for past sexual trauma. One patient told police that in December 2023, Feig touched her inappropriately during what was supposed to be a routine blood pressure check. Feig is now facing a battery charge and is scheduled for trial next month.
A second woman has since reported that she sought help from Feig in the spring of 2023 for sexual trauma, pain, and suicidal thoughts. She told investigators that Feig’s treatment included sessions outside the office, sometimes at his Hillview apartment, and involved inappropriate contact. The police report states that Feig compelled her to repeat phrases such as, “I am safe. Dr. Feig cares about me and won’t hurt me.” The victim also indicated that Feig had used similar methods on other women.
Community Leaders Respond to Allegations of Doctor Sex Abuse
Jessica Hays, president and CEO of Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC) in Sarasota, expressed deep concern over the allegations. She emphasized that patients are vulnerable and should be able to trust their physicians, urging anyone who feels uncomfortable to trust their instincts and seek support.
Brain Wave Center Takes Immediate Action
The Brain Wave Center responded to the arrest by terminating Feig’s employment and pledging full cooperation with law enforcement. In a statement, the center reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safe and respectful environment for all patients and staff. Leadership is now reviewing safety protocols and offering support to those affected as the investigation continues.
Ongoing Investigation and Call for Victims to Come Forward
Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to contact Sarasota police. The case has sparked renewed discussion about patient safety and the importance of reporting inappropriate behavior in healthcare settings.
Legal Pathways for Patients Sexually Abused by Physicians
When a doctor violates a patient’s trust, the impact can be devastating and long-lasting. Many survivors are left wondering what steps they can take to protect themselves and seek accountability. Attorney Michael Haggard, a Florida lawyer with extensive experience representing survivors of sexual abuse, shares the legal options available to those harmed by medical professionals and how the law can support their path forward.
Laurence Banville, Esq.: Michael, when patients experience abuse by a physician, what legal steps can they take to protect themselves and hold the perpetrator accountable?
Michael Haggard, Esq.: Victims have both criminal and civil options. Reporting to law enforcement is important, as it can lead to criminal charges and help prevent further abuse. On the civil side, survivors can file lawsuits against the doctor and sometimes the medical facility if there was negligence in hiring or supervision. These lawsuits can seek compensation for emotional distress, medical expenses, and other damages.
Banville: If someone is hesitant to come forward, what protections are in place for their privacy?
Haggard: Florida law allows victims of sexual abuse to request confidentiality throughout the legal process. Courts often use initials instead of full names, and there are protections to keep sensitive information private. Victims can also speak with an attorney confidentially before deciding on any action.
Banville: Can a medical center be held liable if abuse occurs on their premises?
Haggard: Yes, medical centers have a duty to ensure patient safety. If they failed to properly screen, supervise, or respond to complaints about a physician, they can be held responsible. Each case is unique, so it’s important for survivors to consult with a lawyer experienced in this area.
Banville: What would you say to someone unsure about taking legal action?
Haggard: You are not alone, and you have rights. Even if you’re not ready to report, speaking with a lawyer can help you understand your options and what to expect. Support is available, and taking that first step can be empowering.
