School Staff Member’s Report Launches Investigation Into Abuse Allegations
Earlier this month, a Cabrillo High School staff member alerted authorities that a female student had been sexually assaulted off campus by a substitute staff member who also serves as a coach. Detectives began gathering evidence immediately, leading to Vigil’s arrest.
Multiple Felony Charges Filed Against CA Substitute Coach
Vigil currently faces one count each of statutory rape, arranging to meet with a minor for lewd purposes, and contacting a minor to commit a felony. He is being held on $100,000 bail as the investigation continues.
Detectives Believe There Could Be More Victims
Police have reason to believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact Long Beach Police Detective Jared Asato with the child and elder abuse division at 562-570-7321.
Legal Options for Families Impacted by Substitute Teacher Abuse
Our team spoke with seasoned California sexual abuse lawyer Jason Amala about the legal options available to families whose children have suffered abuse by a substitute teacher. They discussed how victims can seek compensation through civil claims and the role of criminal proceedings, stressing the importance of timely action and proper guidance throughout the process.
Laurence Banville, Esq.: What legal remedies do families have if their child has been harmed by someone, such as a substitute teacher?
Jason Amala, Esq.: Families can file civil lawsuits seeking damages for the harm caused, including compensation for emotional trauma and any medical expenses. It’s important to act within California’s statute of limitations, which can vary based on the victim’s age and circumstances.
Banville: Are there any specific challenges when dealing with cases involving school employees?
Amala: Yes, schools and related entities can be held liable for negligence if they failed to properly screen or supervise staff. These cases often require a thorough investigation, and victims may also have criminal proceedings supporting their claims.
Banville: What should families do first if they suspect abuse?
Amala: Report the incident to law enforcement immediately, preserve any evidence, and contact an experienced attorney who can guide them through both the criminal and civil justice systems.
