Aurora, IL – A chiropractor from Aurora, Illinois, faces serious criminal charges after being accused of sexually abusing two teenage boys under his care, officials announced Monday.
Multiple Charges Filed Against Murtaza Hameed
Murtaza Hameed, 46, of Naperville, has been charged with one count of criminal sexual assault, five counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, one count of attempted criminal sexual assault, and one count of misdemeanor battery. The charges were announced by DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Aurora Police Chief Keith Cross.
Hameed appeared in court over the weekend. A judge ordered that he remain in custody as he awaits trial.
Allegations Span Nearly a Decade
Authorities allege that Hameed sexually abused a 17-year-old boy during a treatment session at Arwa Chiropractic, located at 3845 McCoy Dr #105, Aurora, IL 60504, on January 11. After the appointment, the teen informed his father, who then contacted the Aurora Police Department. Police involved the DuPage County Children’s Center to assist with the investigation.
During their inquiry, investigators uncovered allegations of a similar incident involving a 16-year-old boy in 2016.
Police Commend Victims’ Courage
Aurora Police Detective Jennifer Hillgoth praised the two victims for coming forward, stating, “It’s traumatic and scary to experience that when you’re the victim of a sex crime, and for them to be able to come forward and give that disclosure speaks volumes. It takes a lot of courage to do so.”
Chiropractic Office Closed
On Monday, the Arwa Chiropractic office remained closed, with a sign on the door citing an unforeseen emergency. Police confirmed that Hameed is the only chiropractor practicing at that location.
Next Steps and Appeal for Information
Hameed’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 2. Authorities are urging anyone who may have additional information or believes they may have been a victim to contact Detective Hillgoth at cosentij@aurora.il.us or 630-256-5554.
Detective Hillgoth advised parents, “Just be supportive of their children. If their child was a victim and makes a disclosure, be supportive in that process and reach out to us, and we’ll do the same in return.”
Legal Options for Victims: Illinois Attorney Explains Rights After Sexual Abuse by a Chiropractor
Victims of sexual abuse by healthcare professionals often face confusion and uncertainty about their next steps. Experienced Illinois sexual abuse attorney Erv Nevitt outlines the immediate actions survivors can take, the legal avenues available, and the support systems in place for those affected by abuse in a chiropractic setting.
Laurence Banville: Erv, for anyone abused by a chiropractor in Illinois, what immediate steps should they consider?
Erv Nevitt, Esq.: The first step is to report the incident to law enforcement. This helps initiate a criminal investigation and ensures the abuse is documented. Victims should also seek medical attention and preserve any evidence, such as appointment records or communication with the practitioner.
Banville: What about civil legal options?
Nevitt: Victims can file a civil lawsuit against the chiropractor for damages, including pain and suffering, medical expenses, and emotional distress. In some cases, if the chiropractic office failed to properly supervise or ignored warning signs, the business itself could also be liable.
Banville: Is there a time limit to file these claims?
Nevitt: Yes, Illinois has statutes of limitations for both criminal charges and civil lawsuits. For civil cases involving sexual abuse, the timeline often depends on the victim’s age and when the abuse was discovered, so it’s important to consult an attorney as soon as possible.
Banville: What support is available for those coming forward?
Nevitt: Many advocacy organizations and legal professionals offer confidential consultations and support. Victims should know they are not alone and that there are resources to help them through both the legal and healing process.
