Conway, SC – A college student only identified as Jane Doe has taken legal action against rideshare company Lyft and driver M.D. Soriful Islam, following a harrowing incident of sexual assault. The lawsuit, filed in March 2024, accuses Lyft of negligence and misrepresenting its safety measures, as detailed in court records.
Allegations of Assault and Possibility of More Victims
Jane Doe, a 19-year-old resident of Conway, is suing Islam and Lyft for assault and battery, as well as false imprisonment. The plaintiff’s legal representative expressed concerns that this incident may not be an isolated case, urging potential witnesses or victims to come forward.
Woman Sexually Assaulted By Lyft Driver
According to the lawsuit, on October 21, Jane Doe was at the Crooked Floor Tavern in Conway with friends when she requested a ride from her Lyft app shortly after midnight. The Lyft app paired her with driver M.D. Soriful Islam, and she requested transportation to her apartment, approximately 1.5 miles away. However, the situation quickly escalated when Islam began making unwanted and sexually suggestive remarks, disregarding Jane Doe’s directions and deviating from the specified route. The complaint alleges that Jane Doe started feeling increasingly concerned for her safety.
Upon arriving at her apartment complex, Islam parked the vehicle near her building and allegedly immediately grabbed Jane Doe’s arm, demanding that she kiss him. As she attempted to push him away, Islam locked the doors and began making inappropriate advances, moving his hand upward between her legs. Despite her fear, Jane Doe managed to unlock the door and escape the vehicle.
Lyft Driver Arrested For Sexual Assault During Rideshare
Jane Doe reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of Islam on October 25. He was charged with third-degree assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct and was released on a $30,000 bond in December. His case is still pending. When Jane Doe notified Lyft about the incident, the company’s response merely assured her that she would not be matched with the driver again, providing her with no sense of comfort or safety.
Lyft’s Response and Safety Measures
Lyft’s response to the incident has been criticized for lacking empathy and adequate follow-up. The company’s safety protocols, including background checks and training programs, are under scrutiny in the lawsuit for alleged inadequacies in driver screening and supervision.
Lyft’s History of Driver Sexual Assault Allegations
As Jane Doe seeks damages and legal fees through her lawsuit, this case adds to a series of similar legal actions against Lyft for failing to ensure passenger safety. The company’s past Community Safety Report revealed that from 2017 to 2019, Lyft received over 4,000 reports of sexual assault from its users, with the number increasing year by year within that period.
Call for Rideshare Safety Accountability
With mounting pressure on rideshare companies to prioritize passenger safety, this lawsuit highlights the importance of stringent safety measures and accountability in the transportation industry. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
Legal Recourse for Victims of Lyft Driver Assault
In this recent interview, attorneys Laurence Banville and James B. Moore III, discuss the legal options available to victims of sexual abuse by Lyft drivers or other rideshare drivers. With a focus on empowering victims and navigating the complexities of civil lawsuits, this conversation shines a light on the steps individuals can take to seek accountability and compensation in the face of such traumatic experiences.
Laurence Banville, Esq. (LB): James, thank you for joining me today. Given your experience in handling cases of sexual abuse, what information could you offer to victims who have experienced assault by a Lyft driver and are considering a civil lawsuit?
James B. Moore III, Esq. (JM): It’s a pleasure to be here, Laurence. Victims of such traumatic experiences need to know that they have legal options to seek justice and hold those responsible accountable. In cases involving assault by a rideshare driver, pursuing a civil lawsuit may provide compensation for the harm suffered in addition to sending a strong message about the importance of safety measures in the rideshare industry.
LB: That’s crucial information for victims to consider. What steps should victims take if they believe they have been sexually abused by a Lyft driver?
JM: Victims should first prioritize their safety and well-being by seeking medical attention and reporting the incident to law enforcement. It’s also important to document any evidence, such as conversations, receipts, or injuries, that can support their case. Consulting with an experienced attorney who specializes in sexual abuse cases is essential to navigate the legal process and ensure their rights are protected.
LB: Thank you for highlighting those key steps, James. For victims who may feel overwhelmed or unsure about taking legal action, what message would you pass on?
JM: To all victims of sexual abuse by rideshare drivers, I want to emphasize that you are not alone in this fight for justice.
