According to the Washington Post, a 300-page report was launched on Sunday, May 22, 2022. The document includes horrifying new information regarding certain abuse instances and clarify how denominational authorities actively hindered abuse prevention and change for decades.

Southern Baptist Convention leaders have revealed a substantial and independent third-party examination that discovered that abusers were often ignored, forgotten, and even condemned by upper-level church administrators from within this religious denomination of larger than 16 million people. Furthermore, it disclosed these leaders often deceived their own members to stop them from being aware of the widespread sexual misconduct.

A History of Disregarded Mishandling

The report claims that a key Convention official was credibly accused of sexual assault merely 1 month after completing his two-year stretch as the convention’s president. Furthermore, Johnny Hunt, a popular Georgia Southern Baptist preacher and senior vice president of the SBC’s missions arm, was credibly implicated of abusing a female at a 2010 trip in Panama City Beach, FL. The North American Mission Board president claimed he was unaware of the accusations prior to Hunt resigning on May 13. The report also names 3 previous presidents of the convention, a previous vice president, and the former head of the SBC’s administrative arm as prominent SBC leaders who helped in covering for and even motivated suspected abusers.

One victim detailed being treated with animosity as she alleged she was sexually abused by a youth pastor. The accused pastor served in several Southern Baptist churches in several states. At a meeting with the SBC leaders in 2007, a member of the Executive Committee “turned his back to her during her speech and another chortled.”

Accountability in the Baptist Convention

Russell Moore, the former head of the SBC’s policy branch, the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, stated ‘this is not all Southern Baptists, look at all the good we do.’ The report shows a trend of stonewalling, coverup, retaliation, and intimidation.” He desires this document will bring much-needed reform and hold those liable for their misconduct.
