Caledonia, OH – A former teacher and wrestling coach from Gallia County, Ohio, has been indicted alongside his wife in a serious investigation into sexual conduct with young students. Matthew Huck, who previously taught at River Valley High School, faces multiple charges, including rape and three counts of complicity to commit unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. The Gallia County Sheriff’s Office announced the charges in a recent news release.

Details of the Allegations of Rape and Sexual Misconduct

The rape charge against Huck dates back to 2004 and involves a former student from the high school. According to the news release, the alleged incident took place during a nighttime event at Huck’s residence. Special Prosecutor David Kelley commented on the community’s suspicions, stating, “Many people in Gallia County suspected this was happening, but we needed hard evidence to prove it – now we have it. We’ll be asking a jury of his peers to hold Matthew Huck fully accountable for his predatory behavior.”

Student Rights in Coach Sexual Abuse Cases

The recent indictment of former Gallia County teacher and coach Matthew Huck has brought attention to the serious issue of sexual abuse in educational settings. As communities grapple with the aftermath of such cases, questions arise about the legal rights of victimized students and the accountability of schools. To address these concerns, we met with John Bey, an experienced Ohio sexual abuse attorney. Bey offers valuable information on the legal options available to students who have suffered sexual assault by high school coaches, as well as strategies for holding negligent schools responsible. His insights provide a roadmap for victims and their families seeking to navigate the complex legal landscape surrounding these distressing cases.

Laurence Banville, Esq.: Mr. Bey, what legal rights do students sexually assaulted by high school coaches have?

John Bey, Esq.: Students victimized by coaches can pursue both criminal and civil cases. They can press charges through law enforcement and also file lawsuits against the abuser and potentially the school district. Civil suits allow victims to seek compensation for damages like therapy costs and emotional trauma.

Banville: How can schools be held accountable in these situations?

Bey: Schools can be liable if they failed to properly screen employees, ignored warning signs, or didn’t have adequate policies to protect students. Victims may claim negligent hiring, supervision, or retention of staff. Schools have a duty to provide a safe environment, so failing to prevent or stop abuse can make them legally responsible.

Banville: What advice would you give to affected students and families?

Bey: I encourage victims to report abuse to law enforcement promptly. They should also consult an experienced attorney to understand their options and ensure their rights are protected. Preserving evidence and documenting events is critical. While taking legal action can be difficult, it’s often an important step in the healing process and preventing future abuse.
