A Story of Disregarded Southern Baptist Abuse
Nearly all of these reported events occurred outside of the statutes of limitations, making it unclear how many abusers were really charged. According to the report, an in-house list of predators was kept.
The report asserts that a principal “SBC” leader was credibly accused of sexual assault merely one month after finishing his two-year term as the convention’s president. Additionally, Johnny Hunt, a widely known Georgia Southern Baptist preacher and senior vice president of the SBC’s objectives arm, was credibly accused of assaulting a lady during a 2010 vacation in Panama City Beach, FL. The North American Mission Board president claimed he was uninformed of the allegations prior to Hunt resigning on May thirteenth. The report also names 3 previous presidents of the convention, a former vice president, and the previous head of the SBC’s administrative arm as prominent SBC officials who assisted in covering for and even motivated known abusers.
Responsibility in the Southern Baptist Church
Russell Moore, the previous head of the SBC’s policy branch, the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, stated ‘this is not all Southern Baptists, look at all the good we do.’ The Report demonstrates a trend of stonewalling, coverup, retaliation, and intimidation.” He anticipates this report will bring much-needed reform and hold those responsible for their actions.
