Ventura County, CA – In a disturbing case of betrayal of trust, a former teacher has pleaded guilty to multiple charges of child sex abuse. Paul Herder, 66, admitted to engaging in numerous sexual acts with a student under his care between 2013 and 2017.

Former Private School Teacher Accused of Years of Child Sexual Abuse

Herder, who previously worked at Oak Grove School located at 220 W Lomita Ave, Ojai, CA 93023, was arrested last June in Hawaii after California authorities began investigating claims made by the now-adult victim. The unidentified student reported Herder to authorities in February 2023, alleging that he had “engaged in numerous sexual acts” with her while she was underage.

Extensive History of Teaching Across the Country

Authorities revealed that Herder had an extensive history of teaching at schools across the United States, as well as offering private tutoring throughout his career. In addition to Ojai and Pahoa, Hawaii, he is believed to have taught in Los Angeles, Tucson, Arizona, Hamden, Connecticut, Bangor, Maine, Chesterfield, England, and unknown locations in Thailand and Panama.

Victim Alleges Private School Covered Up Child Sexual Abuse

The victim in this case has filed a civil complaint against Herder, Oak Grove School, and the Krishnamurti Foundation, which operates the school. The complaint alleges that the school engaged in a “coverup” to obfuscate evidence related to the child sex abuse committed upon her and additional unnamed students.

Official Concerned More Victims Abused By Herder

Herder is due in court on April 29 and is expected to be sentenced to six years and eight months in state prison. Authorities have warned that there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward, urging anyone with information to contact the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.

This case serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating impact that child sex abuse can have on victims, and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. As the community grapples with this disturbing revelation, the pursuit of justice and the protection of vulnerable children remain paramount.

Holding Schools Accountable For Child Sexual Abuse

In response to the disturbing case of a CA private school teacher pleading guilty to child sex abuse charges, we sat down with experienced California sexual abuse lawyer Bobby Thompson, Esq. to discuss the legal options available for victims and how to ensure that negligent institutions are held responsible.

Laurence Banville, Esq. (LB): Thank you for joining us today, Bobby. This case is truly heartbreaking, and I know you’ve worked with victims sexually abused by teachers. Can you share some information regarding the legal rights and options available to the victim in situations like this?

Bobby Thompson, Esq. (BT): Absolutely, Laurence. Victims and their families have several avenues to pursue justice. First and foremost, they can file a civil case against the perpetrator, Paul Herder. Additionally,  private schools have a duty to provide a safe environment for children. If they knew or should have known about the abuse and failed to act, they can be held liable in a civil court. These lawsuits allow the victim to seek damages and ensure that the responsible parties are held accountable.

LB: What advice would you give to victims of sexual abuse by teachers or school staff who may be considering taking legal action?

BT: I would encourage them to come forward and report the abuse to the authorities. There are resources and support services available to help them navigate the legal system and seek the justice they deserve.

It’s also crucial for victims to know that they have legal rights and that they should consult with an experienced sexual abuse attorney who can guide them through the process. These attorneys can ensure that their voices are heard and that they receive the compensation and closure they are entitled to.

LB: Thank you, Bobby, for highlighting the importance of holding both perpetrators and negligent institutions accountable in these cases.

BT: Thank you, Laurence. I hope this interview helps empower victims and sends a clear message that we will not tolerate the abuse of power and the betrayal of trust in our schools and communities.
