Camp Verde, AZ – David Castillo, a former head boys and girls cross-country coach at Camp Verde High School, has been arrested on allegations of inappropriate physical contact with a minor. The Camp Verde Marshal’s Office received the allegation on November 13, 2023, and subsequently took Castillo into custody.

AZ Cross Country Coach Arrested For Child Sex Abuse

According to the Camp Verde Marshal’s Office on November 30, Castle was apprehended following the report of possible sexual abuse of a juvenile. He was arraigned on Monday, December 4, in the Verde Valley Justice Court. The specific details of the alleged incident have not been disclosed due to the ongoing investigation.

School District Response to Coach Charged With Sexually Abusing a Minor

The Camp Verde Unified School District swiftly responded to the arrest by issuing a statement on their website. Superintendent Steve Hicks informed the community that Castillo’s arrest was related to inappropriate physical contact with a minor and assured that the incident did not occur on school grounds. The school district immediately contacted local law enforcement upon receiving the report and emphasized their commitment to cooperating fully with the police investigation.

To ensure the safety of students, Mr. Castillo has been informed that he is not permitted on school property and is prohibited from contacting students. The Camp Verde Unified School District is taking the matter seriously and urged anyone with relevant information to contact the Camp Verde Marshal’s Office.

Investigation into Possibility of Additional Victims

Due to the nature of the allegations, the Camp Verde Marshal’s Office announced on Facebook, on November 30, that detectives will be conducting further research into potential victims from Castillo’s past. They will be reviewing the past 10 years of his career to gather more information.

Records Reveal History of Sexual Abuse Allegations

Newly obtained police records reveal that David Edward Castillo was previously investigated by the Prescott Valley Police Department in 2018. The investigation was initiated following reports of suspicious activity and a possible delayed sex offense involving a 12-year-old victim. During the investigation, Castillo maintained his innocence, and the case did not proceed to prosecution due to a lack of physical evidence, witnesses, and Castillo’s denial.

Community Shocked at Arrest of Head Cross Country Coach

At the time of the previous investigation, Camp Verde High School Principal Mark Showers expressed complete unawareness of any allegations against Castillo. Showers conveyed that Castillo had a good reputation in the community and was highly regarded by students and parents.

The arrest of David Castillo has sent shockwaves through the Camp Verde community. As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information to come forward in order to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. Understanding Available Legal Rights for Survivors of School Sexual Abuse

In response to the recent arrest of a former high school coach on charges of sexual abuse involving a minor, the legal options available to victims of school sexual abuse have come into focus. To break down this complex and important matter, we had the opportunity to sit with Kevin Biniazan, an experienced Arizona-based school sexual abuse lawyer. In this interview, Attorney Biniazan provides valuable insights into pursuing civil cases against liable parties and seeking justice for victims.

Attorney Laurence Banville (LB): Thank you for joining us, Kevin. Given the recent arrest of the coach in Camp Verde, what legal options do the victims have in pursuing justice when abused by a school employee?

Attorney Kevin Biniazan (KB): Thank you, Laurence. In cases of school sexual abuse, victims and their families may have grounds to pursue civil lawsuits against various parties who may share liability. These parties can include the school district, administrators, coaches, or anyone who failed in their duty to protect the safety and well-being of the students.

LB: Could you elaborate on the potential grounds for a civil lawsuit in such cases?

KB: Certainly. Victims and their families may have grounds to file civil lawsuits based on various legal theories, such as negligence, premises liability, negligent hiring or supervision, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The specific circumstances of each case will determine the applicable legal theories and liable parties.

LB: How can pursuing a civil case help the victims?

KB: Pursuing a civil case can provide victims with a sense of closure, validation, and financial compensation for the harm they have endured. It can also hold responsible parties accountable for their actions or negligence, and potentially lead to changes in policies and procedures to prevent future incidents of abuse.

LB: What else can you tell victims or their families who are considering pursuing a civil case?

KB: It’s crucial for victims and their families to consult with an experienced school sexual abuse attorney who can assess the case, advise on the legal options available, and guide them through the legal process. These cases can be complex, emotionally challenging, and require a thorough understanding of the laws and regulations pertaining to school sexual abuse.

LB: Thank you for sharing your insights on this important matter. We appreciate your time.

KB: My pleasure. It’s important to raise awareness about the legal options available to victims of school sexual abuse. I hope this information helps those who have suffered find the justice they deserve.
